What do you Utah guys think? I know these post fly around here every year at this time, but I'm just not real sure which way to go.
I know I'm not in the running for the best but what do you think would be the best hunt that I would have a decent chance at with any weapon with 9 NR pts?
When I started applying I had my sights set on a Pauns tag. Now its a Henrys tag but that aint happnin in the next couple years, I'm sure.

Dolores with the new dates sure look good
Books either with bow or anything else

Thanks a bunch in advance guys!
Dave

Depending on how many other opportunities you'll get to kill a mule deer of a lifetime, i'd hold out for the Henry's.
You've held out this long, what's a few more???

Do you want to kill the buck of a lifetime? Then keep it up and wait for the Henrys. Or do you just want to kill a good buck? Then cash them in on A books muzzie tag.

With that many points, the Delores would be a good chance. But that can be an extremly tough hunt, depending on the weather.

I've got 14 NR deer points and it might take me more than 10 years to draw the Henries. I would be making another plan if I were you. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but that is what it's come to for non-residents. Or you could become a resident.

Thanks for all of the replies guys! Going to think on it for a few days I reckon. Still thinking hard about the Dolores hunt, not that I could get it this year anyways.

camuleycrazy,

You think it'll be 10 more years for you with 14? I would think that you were right there in the next year or 2. This shows you at 50% right now.

Yup camuleycrazy...goood news for you....it's within your sights brotha!!

If i had too wait ten years for that tag, i'd slit my wrists!!

There is a cool draw odds feature on this site now where you can see what hunts are available, or at least have a chance at with 9 NR points. Both San Juan and the Books are equal with about a 25% chance for any weapon. Any muzzy hunt has horrible odds, even with 9 points. I believe you have a 100% shot at both Vernon and Oak Creek.

San Juan is a great hunt, I drew an archery tag there in 95 and had the time of my life, but it isn't like it used to be. Some real nice bucks have come off there this year though. I have hunted archery and any weapon on Vernon. Vernon can be good if you do your homework and are patient. Oak Creek is some tough country with a low deer population but holds some great bucks. I have friends that have hunted the Books, a lot of deer with potential to see a monster. I have seen a couple pigs come out of there this last season.

Good luck with whatever hunt you put in for. There are great opportunities on any unit you put in for, its what you make of them.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-07-08 AT 04:28PM (MST)[p]A resident with nine points could wait over ten years for the Henrys - but I would wait cuz if you give up your points now you are basically taking a "lottery" approach for life. There are exceptions - but not for many of us.

Slam - you have more than nine I think I read. There is potential that someones gonna kill some whoppers next year with all the dang water coming down in Utah.

There are 2 non-residents with 15 points for this years drawing. One of them drew last year but turned in his tag. Those guys have 50% odds.

ca,

With any luck that tag returning crap is DONE! This is why that rule sucks. You should be in now ca. Good luck! I watched some Henry video last week.:) Wow!

This far into it I would say hold out for the Henries, however with some of the bucks that were taken off of the Oak Creek unit this year I would say if your looking at hunting this year or next I would give it a try. There are alot more Monster bucks on the Henries but the other unit are Limited Entry units also and for good reason. Good luck to you on what ever you decide.

There a lot of guys with 9 points resident and nonresident including myself. We still have a long way to go for the Henries. The book cliffs can be great but you need to work hard and hunt long or get lucky to kill a pig. I hunted the books last year on the rifle and I ended up getting lucky.

I wouldn't wait on the Henry's tag. Things change all the time. I remember a certain "plateau" that used to be the place to be and look at it now. Just get a unit that it good and hunt above and beyond. To wait 7-10 more years to try and get the best may bite you in the azz, and is a gamble.

San Juan doe's not seem worth 9 pts, seems to be needing some help from what I see!

lonetree, that is awesome you got to hunt the book cliffs and still have your points. How did you do? I'm holding out for the Book Cliffs with my 9 points. I hunted there two seasons in a row before it was closed for a few years. Are you going back?
