I'm looking for a little advise about a good archery mule deer unit for a D-I-Y non-resident. Any suggestions? I was looking into unit 82 and was wondering how it is? I'm really lost; please help!

Thanks

Also, how does the draw work for archery hunters. What type of license do I apply for. Their regs are really confusing.

Draw the tag, then purchase an archery tag if you wish to bowhunt. You can hunt with both weapons in Wyo.If you are looking at area 82 type 1,be prepared to wait many years to draw the most sought after tag in the state.Drawing the region tag would be much easier.

If you want to hunt the eastern side of the Divide from area 82, you can try to draw region D. Seems to be about 50/50 with 0 points. You have to draw the general tag, and then you can hunt the entire month of Sept if you buy the archery stamp. you will also have a habitat stamp to purchase before hunting as well.

This is a stupid question but if you draw the region tag can you hunt in unit 82?

No, If you read the regulations, the limited areas like 82 are excluded from the areas you can hunt within the region.

Yes you can hunt 82 with the region W tag. You just can't hunt it during the late season unless you have the limited quota type 1 tag. Area 82 is one of the most heavily hunted areas in the state during the general season due to the large amount of public land and easy access.

If you just want to archery hunt, you are wasting the area 82 type 1 tag - Its beauty is that you can hunt the late season. If you're after archery, put in for the regional tag.

Seems like we got kinda hung up on area 82. That's a great area, but Wyoming has other quality hunts as well. I'd say 82 is hard to archery hunt. You might look into country that has more brush and rim rocks (and less timber) to archery hunt. There are lots of places where you can usually draw a license and hunt with a bow. I would look at the Game and Fish website and check license odds. And then look for advice from here and G&F plus others like BLM and Forest Service folks.

Starting now is a good idea. The license deadline will be here before you know it.

We hunted 82 this year on a W tag.If you bow hunt in September down in the sage brush hills and canyons you will see tons of deer.I don't know how many people bow hunt it but there were tons of people for the rifle hunt. The best buck we saw killed was a 23" four point my nephew took. The odds for a W tag with no points were 14%.I think it was 100% for the special draw, with no points.Good luck,I won't go back.

When I stated you can not hunt in 82 I was referring to the limited hunt period. It is correct that the area can be hunted outside of the special season but that is of little help when all the good hunting is during the special hunt. Like opbuckslayer indicated it sure would not be where I would suggest someone to use there preference points.
