Save Colorado Mule Deer

As you likely know, Colorado's Gunnison Basin and Western Slope deer are in danger of starvation from deep snow and cold temps.

Colorado is being proactive and is starting to feed deer now, instead of waiting until it's too late.

I believe that all of us that love to hunt Colorado or just hope to some day should take the time to donate to the emergency feeding efforts.

It would be a shame to lose the deer herds that have finally made a comeback!

They've made it super easy to donate at

http://wildlife.state.co.us/wildlifestore/category.aspx?categoryID=47

I will send anyone that donates to the feeding efforts a free Vol. 3 Never Enough Western Big Game DVD, if you'll cover the shipping for $3.00.

I sent one. Once again the hunters come to the rescue. I can't imagine any animal rights groups are doing anything to help out.

That's great guys.

I think the best way to do this is....

Send me a pm after you've donated and I'll have you snail mail me a copy of your receipt and the $3.00. I'll then send your DVD.

Or, if you're going to be at the Western Hunting Expo bring a copy of your receipt and I'll give you a DVD there-I'll be in the Vortex or Crooked Horn booth. You can save yourself the shipping.

Let's help save some deer!:)

Donation complete!! i sure hope it helps i moved to CO almost 4 years ago from NM and could not beleive the ammount of mule deer that state holds!

I just sent a donation. I hope it isn't too late to save some of these deer. Any positive weather forecasts for the affected areas? Thanks Prizm for the incentive with the DVD, you are a true sportsman.

Kind of thought it odd that they capped the options at $100- seems like some of the Governors tag crew might send in ten grand, if given the option, whereas its doubtful they would submit 100 times.

Anyway good on you Prism,
do you got any womens tennis or mud-wrestling vids ? as I'm more into that kinda stuff :)

Done, a hundred bucks seem like the least we can do. anyone planning on donating I'd urge you to do it now and not wait until it's too late. if they see the money coming in they're more likely to get started early and do it right.

Colorado treats the NR hunter pretty fair in my opinion. I'll donate more later if it's needed, keep us posted

What bout Wyoming? I'd think the situation would be getting serious there as well. I don't feel quite as generous towards them since they're going to get $700 out of my wife and I just to apply for tags we won't draw. they should be able to afford caviar and truffles for the game if they need it.

My donation has been made please try and give at least a 15.00 donation every donation will count and could help save the deer this year.
Monte

9news here in Denver just showed Monarch has received over 20 FEET of snow this season. The most they have had up to this point in January in 69 years. Donation Made!

I also agree a few bucks is in order.

cabin,

I also thought that about SFW? As a member, I would like to see a little something go toward this from the kitty? It would be the neighborly thing to do.

Done deal. Thanks for the headsup Paul. I agree with ktc...and add that the MDF should step up to the plate as well if they haven't already. What better way to "spread the love". I'm gonna feed them little buggers. My whole mule deer hunt will hinge on the outcome of this winter in that area.

It's always an adventure!!!

I just donated also, and thanks for posting the link. The DOW is also needing volunteers to give the food to the deer and antelope. The weather trend is calling for clearing weather but colder temps. Hopefully, it would get above 25 and start melting the south slopes.

Leonard

I have to say prism what you are doing is awesome. A lot of us probalby wouldn't have even thought about a donation if it wasn't for this post and the dvd incentive is great. Thanks

This is the first time I have posted on MM. I use to post on the forums on the UDWR website, until that was shut down.

I wanted to thank Prism and everyone else who is donating or has donated for the deer in Colorado. I also donated, mainly because I should draw my first Colorado muley tag this year. This website is full of great people trying to help wildlife throughout the west.

Done! Thanks for posting the link Prism. Also, thanks for stepping up and offering free DVD's, because of that I will buy one from you at the Expo, instead of getting one for free.

The power of Monster Muleys...its amazing!! :)

Weather update:

Cold and unsettled through the week and next weekend, possibly a break early next week. No big snowstorms but subzero nights and occasional (mostly light) snow is going to be the norm for all of the high country through the weekend.

Prism-awesome, excellent way to step up and set an example. The deer and the MDF
owe you a MAJOR thank-you, so I'll start: THANKS

Doug

My husband and I just donated $100 to the cause...

Thanks for the heads-up!

I'd be happy to pay the $3.00 shipping for your DVD, too.

I will speak to my wife as it's pay day week and see what amount we will send. Thank you for the link Paul...

It has been one unusually cold winter here in Western Colorado.
Seeing many deer in poor shape already and winter is not close to over.
After the governor tag was filled in these here parts the weather has turned for the worse and the outlook for next year looks "Cloudy".
All your efforts are appreciated and Prism deserves a major applause for helping motivate everyone to act.
Best,
Jerry

Hey Prism;

Good call! $ 100 went that way from me also. Too bad I can't send some of this 60 degree Kali weather.

Donation made. You are one heck of a guy Prism. I'm not only going to buy a DVD but I think I might have to get me one of those new NvrEnuf hats and a t-shirt too! I saw someone waring a brown one and I've been wanting one ever since! Very nice. Are you going to have the shirts and hats available in your booth?

Thanks again for your efforts to help the CO deer,

NvrEnuf

Thanx for the heads-up Prism...
I agree with a couple of other guys; I'll be sure to stop by and find you at the Expo. Thanx for the offer for the free vid, but I wouldnt dream of taking it.
You are a class act.
Steve

Subject: Feeding the Deer

Glen,

I don't know if this has made the news but if it has not perhaps it should.
http://wildlife.state.co.us/wildlifestore/category.aspx?categoryID=47

I've made a donation to help get the deer through this winter. It has taken almost 23 years for the herd to recover to near what it was after the 1984 winter, when there was no feeding program.

Thanks,

Fred Judson

Money well spent, thanks for the heads up Prism.

Wyoming has been flat miserable the last couple of weeks. Hopefully the 40 mph winds have cleared off something to eat for the boys.

Thanks to you guys we've raised a purdy good amount of $$$ for the muleys.

Hopefully old man winter will be a bit kinder to us all over the next few months.

I'm happy to be able to help out, and appreciate so many of you taking me up on the DVD offer.

Keep it up!

I don't get a chance to see any mule deer/elk/antelope here in Alaska but the thought of them starving just does't set right.
Hope the donations/feeding pulls them through.
AKhunter

Does anyone know if they are feeding any other areas besides the gunnison basin? As you all know, there are plenty of other good units that I am sure are getting plenty of snow.

I have no gifts to offer, but I am challenging the 13k+ users to get on the ball and donate something! Whether you hunt Colorado or not we owe it to the animals to help them out. Any $15 donation will surely help.

I just put my $100 in......and as a board member of Southern Utah SCI chapter, we are looking at options to send them some money out of the chapter also. I think anything will help!!!

There are those that DO and those that DONT.......please be one of the ones that DO!!!!!!!!!!!

Fairly new @ this site.

Thanks
Paul

Like many that have donated I'll never hunt CO for deer, just goes to show hunters STEP UP for wildlife!!

I'm in - THANK YOU PRISM

Done, let's not have another 83-84 diaster!
Pray for breaks of snow and temps to allow
the deer/elk/antelope to paw through to any
food source.
Kbuck

Thanks for info Prism,

Sent $100.00

Had great hunt there in 54 two years ago, Hope they keep them alive for your future memories !!!!

Did hunting fool's carters help out? I sure hope so.

Just got back from an amazing Coues deer hunt in Mexico. Man, those little buggers are fun to hunt!

I've got a bunch of DVDs to send out. If you haven't received yours in a week let me know.

Sure wish I could of brought back some of that Sonoran sunshine for our mule deer!

Prism,

Thanks for your efforts. The sad part is that a thread like 15" bases gets 300 posts. A website like this gets a important thread like this one and it stops at 50. With 13k "hunters" you would think this one would go over 1000. I have seen way more than 50 posts about Gunnison Basin deer questions. Go figure.

How is the sunburn?;-)

KTC I couldn't agree more, there will be 100 threads on here in a few months wondering where the best deer hunt in Colorado is and where the least winter kill was. some of us would rather be proactive than reactive, besides it's the right thing and the humane thing to save as many deer as we can. thanks to all who are contributing and helping in this crisis, Prism deserves special thanks as well.

The weather channel showed some nasty windchills out in Gunnison for today. Not exactly what they need right now.

Are the deer that summer in the Rio Grande drainage of unit 76 wintering in this heavily impacted area as well?

I'm going out to help today. My friend has been feeding 250+ deer this week - 15 bags a day. We had another 8-10" of snow this week with more on the way. Lots of people helping and more than 60 sites set up. I can definitely say the program is making an impact.

THANKS to everyone who has contributed $$ to the effort.

OK, I'm slow (had to wait for the paycheck) but I gotter done- $25. Sounds like the feeding could still use the funds. Thanks Prism.

The Christian

Jerkee, did I read that right? $1,000!!!! Thanks for really stepping up. I think that's the biggest donation yet (I haven't read every one of the 60 posts, though.)

$10.00 or $1,000, it all adds up. Good job to the MM'rs. By my calculations, there's still like 12,940 more MM'rs out there.

The Christian

Just sent my $100.00,lets hope the weather breaks soon, maybe founder can put the link to donate right on the MM homepage?

Jerry

Prism
I just donated 100.00 to feed the deer. How do I get you the three dolars for dvd?

Send me a pm or an email and I'll get back to you.

Show season is in full swing so if I don't get back to you or get your DVD to you soon please be patient....

Thanks!

Bump!

I am hearing Colorado Basin deer and in a world of hurt! Please update us Waygoner? Keep the donations going guys. Who is going to help this situation except a handfull of good folks here? PETA?;-) Waygoner, is the die off as bad as I am hearing or just rumor?

I am very impressed that so many have helped no matter how big or small the donation. Do what you can/feel good about! Please help Utah deer also on another thread!

Hi Paul,

I just made my donation. As far as the DVD you don't have to send me one. Whatever it would cost you to give one to me add that amount to your own donation. I already purchased Vol. 3 from you a while back so I don't need another.

Hats off to you for stepping up and letting everyone know about the feeding program and for creating a incentive to get fellow hunters / sportsman to step up and help out.

Jim

ok im in to feed some deer , come on anyone else, i talked to the f&g yesterday , they said march can be there worst month . prism, that is a really generous offer for the cd. ill get ahold of you. ill also buy one for your commitment to the deer. if i lived closer i would go help feed. here in idaho i voulenteered, but fortunatly it warmed up and there not feeding in mccall, yet

i dont plan on hunting there any time soon but i can afford 50$ so i did help out.its not much but all i can afford right now.is that even 1 bag of feed? i would like to think others would do the same for my state. thanks for keeping the post alive. i didnt know march was the worst month things look pretty good here in SLC right now. its easy to forget about our neighbors.

slcmuley shows his true colors. Anyone going to spend it on something else then complain that Utah is not Colorado? Good job slcmuley. I guarantee most of you will want to hunt Gunnison some time in the future. Don't make 50-100 guys carry the load.
The Christian

I have to wait a week Christain, and I am only in for $15 more, but next Friday it is on it's way.

You guys who go lots, or even 15, way to go.

Christian,

Did the F&G mention anything about how the feed is helping and what benefit that has had? I am glad they jumped on this early. Colorado has made a huge effort.

maybe we should total what is mm hunters donated, then go to one of the bunny hugger forums and see how much they have donated?

mdbrown, you're right about MMr's compared to the bunny huggers-no comparison. I just know looking at the number of hunters who applied for Gunnison basin last year and the numbers of registered MMr's, there is an apprant gap between donations and potential donatees.

The Christian

ktc,
can you believe that I forgot to ask if the feeding was helping?
The warden was telling me how many deer will likely be lost in the Gunnison and I just didn't get the specifics on the feeding. However, he acted like feeding was a good and necessary thing at this point. Most wildlife officials have an "anti-feeding" air about them but he didn't at all. I'll check with them before the applications are due and will ask that question.

thanks mtndog. We were just trying to have a little fun and get people thinking about donating that haven't. I didn't donate right away when Prism put up the feeding post, but was compelled when I saw all the hunters stepping up.

The Christian

Some people here are true sportsmen, more concerned about the resource ( deer in this case ) than they are what they can do with their points.

This is the same kind of thinking that Teddy Roosevelt had and the reason we still have game to hunt today. any hunter who can afford even the minimum donation should feel obligated to do so even if they don't ever expect to hunt around Gunnison, just because it's the right thing to do.

This whole thing has made me sick all winter, I'm hoping for the best. I just sent in another $100 and hope others will send what they can.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-01-08 AT 10:14AM (MST)[p]Finally did what should have been done a while ago. Couldn't sent alot, but hope it helps!

peez3006 thanks! This post is headed for 100 posts as it should. If 15" bases can top 300, this one should at least see 100.

"BIG GAME FEEDING OPERATION CONTINUES IN GUNNISON BASIN

Difficult winter conditions remain in the Gunnison Basin and the big game feeding and baiting effort by the Colorado Division of Wildlife in the area is continuing.

The DOW is feeding about 8,600 deer at 131 different sites, and about 440 pronghorn at 12 sites. In addition, hay is being provided to about 3,300 elk to bait the animals away from ranchers' hay stacks and major roads.

Snow depths are above 30 inches at many of the feeding sites and most available food sources remain covered north of Highway 50. Total snow accumulation in the low elevation areas near Gunnison for this winter is 86 inches, which puts this season in the top five since records started being kept in 1899. Temperatures remain cold and little melting has occurred at the feed sites.

No major storms have hit the basin since January. Snow has continued to accumulate in small weather events but not enough to impede feeding operations. The feeding is running smoothly, said J Wenum, area wildlife manager. About 30 DOW staff and 80 volunteers are working on the effort daily.

During the last week of February attempts were made to reduce the amount of hay being delivered to elk. Unfortunately, the elk began moving quickly back to conflict areas so baiting has been continued.

Some problems with dogs chasing wildlife have occurred. Wildlife officers have written a few tickets to pet owners and have warned numerous others. Owners of pets that harass wildlife can be fined $274 or more.

The feeding operation started on Jan. 10. Wildlife managers are now evaluating conditions to determine how much longer the feeding operation should continue. At this point weather conditions indicate that the feeding operation will likely continue through March.

With warmer temperatures snow melting will accelerate and natural food sources will be exposed. As the range begins to clear deer will begin moving back to the natural food sources.

When snow depth decreases, DOW biologists plan to conduct a ground search of sample areas to estimate deer mortality. During an average winter it's estimated that about 18 percent of the total deer population will die. Biologists expect mortality rates to be higher this winter."

I'm guessing feeding will take place until the end of the month, at which time the DVD offer will be up. Thanks again for your generous donations. I believe we helped save some deer.

Prism- thanks for the incentive to donate with the DVD- I got mine watched last night and loved it. It was very entertaining and I got a kick out of "The Ring of Fire." Everyone should donate just to get the DVD. It's icing on the cake for helping Colorado's deer. Thanks Prism

The Christian

Well guys, the DVD offer is up.

Thanks to everyone that took me up on the offer.

Good luck in the draws! Paul
