General Craig area questions

Looking at hunting the Craig area for OTC bull, third season, this year.

I've never hunted in this area before. Can anyone suggest a rough idea on where to stay? Campground? NF access? Not looking for any honey holes, just a rough idea on a general area to stay in the Craig area. Typically we will travel with a truck camper and a 5' x 8' trailer with a utv.

I've hunted in the Meeker/Buford area in the White River NF, so I am semi familiar with the altitude/weather/terrain. Can I expect some of the same near Craig?

Thank you for your help.

There are lots of Motels in Craig BUT there is a KOA Campground on the east side of town too....has HOT shower also. Expect a LOT of ORANGE COLOR in the area or at least that is what it use to be like.

3rd season can be if E in that area at times. I have had the upper areas of the National Forrest snowed in. We have always camped o the Black Mountain access road.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-28-15 AT 06:58AM (MST)[p]My buddies hunted north of Craig 3rd rifle this past year. Ran into some nasty weather. They had a local drop a heated trailer a little ways from their hunting spots. Took them a while to get on the bulls but on day five got on them. Expect hunting pressure but if you get far away from the forest roads, have enough time, and work hard you may have some opportunities. Good luck.

I hunt the country mentioned here during the 1st season and there are a ton of elk in that country.

I have good friends that hunt the 3rd every year. They do well BUT they kill their elk in different areas almost every year. Some years they kill up where we hunt, and kill better bulls too.

After hunting this OTC tag for 12-15 years, they know where to go depending upon the weather.

Some years they can't even get to where we hunt. 3rd season is very weather "unpredictable" at that elevation, that time of year.
