Well here we are again a above normal cold and snow winter.

And today I read a srory in the STANDARD, And it says Colorado is starting to feed there deer...

Well the fact is they been feeding them for weeks..

Utah says well we will see what happens in a few weeks.... WHAT!!!

Another Quote is " Some deer will succumb to winter. Thats reality"

Well here REALITY for you if we wait tell there about dead they will die!!!

I know that it is hard for the DWR to go out and feed deer as there is some neg affects. But at this point I feel like if we dont there will be bigger affect on the Muledeer herd..

The DWR says they are capable and prepared and able to feed..

So why dont they get it started now? we know we are not going to get any better weather any time soon...

I know I will get crap about this but to me it only makes sense..

A lot of guys up north here started feeding deer towards the end of December. The snow and and cold have become such that action is needed! UTAH DWR I hope your listening.

Clynt,

C'mon man, feeding only works in Colorado and other states-along with micromanagement.

We have different deer over here and different habitat issues, more predation, etc, etc............

I think Colorado must have it's own genetic strain of muleys.

Pretty sad deal for sure:(

I imagine they'll start feeding, but it'll likely be too late.

We have A LOT of winter left to go.

It's easier to let the private landowners deal with it I guess.

The DWR rep claimed winter of 05 was worse than this! That's quite hard to believe! We'll have to trust their word and see what happens! I am very impressed at the response to
the Colorado problem, it proves sportsmen do care!

THATS MY POINT PRISM You are 100% right..

I think the UDWR thinks they have the best ideas for the herds.

But Im telling you they better look at what Colorado is doing!!

I think proof is in the fact that Colorado cares about what hunting brings to that state. And in some casses I think it is very important to some of the smaller towns of Colorado...

I am sick of hearing well Utah has some great limited entry Units. But the over the counter tags suck!!!!

or

Can you amagine what Utah would be like if they did the same thing to deer as Colorado..

Ya I know Colorado has a lot more area for deer and can have better deer herds. but come on. Utah should be micro managing these gen areas.. There are some good hunting now but it could be a whole lot better

They should have started feeding them a month ago, if they want it to work.

I didn't know Utah had over the counter tags. News to me.

Some people just gont get it.

AMEN, JUST TAKE A PEAK AT COLORADO,BE THE LITTLE BROTHER AND DO WHAT THE BIG BROTHER IS DOING.... IT WORKS!

For years now the DWR has been trying things to help the deer. I live in Cache Valley and the DWR decided the Mt. Lions were the culprits, so they had a harvest objective hunt for 3 or 4 years in a row where more than 100 lions were taken, they say a lion kills one deer per week, well 100 lions times 52 weeks equals 5200 deer that should be in our mountains. That should be a noticable increase in deer, but it hasn't done a thing for the herd. Deer have dealt with predation for hundreds of years, and with snow for that matter and survived, we as hunters and general public are the problem, we build homes on their winter range, we tear up their summer range, hunt and kill them from august to december, litter all over the mountains and wonder why there aren't any deer. Let's quit blaming everyone else, it starts with us, if we want better hunting we need to be better conservationists. I agree the DWR needs to micro manage, I wish they would shut down the entire northern unit for 3 years, I think it would help immensely, but just like I'm not relying on the government to feed and clothe me when I retire, I'm not relying on them to make my hunting better. If all of us did a little, collectively we could do a ton.

If they really wanted to help out the Cache they'd cut hunter numbers. As it sits now, the Cache and most of the Northern Regions public lands are just a money maker.

If managed right, the Cache would be one of the best spots in the state. The genetics are among the best in the world.

Another sad story of Utah's mismanagement of its deer herds......

Shoot, and our old buddy Lou C isn't even around to blame.....

Doe tags anyone?

LAST EDITED ON Jan-30-08 AT 05:20PM (MST)[p]Curious to see if any of you know at what
elevation(s) "snowpack" is measured? Seems to me that most of the weather stations that measure snow depths are at the highest elevations of a given mountain range.

I understand that overall the entire state is just over 100% snowpack for this time of year.

What I believe we're experiencing is a WAY above average amount of snow at the mid to lower elevations. Elevations that probably aren't factored into snowpack totals?

I know that around here there is more snow on the WINTER RANGE than there has likely been in 10-20 years. Not too mention it's been cold/windy (snow drifts), new houses, roads, more traffic etc....

Gonna be some huge bull elk next year with all of this moisture. Conservation tags should go for all time highs.........

doityourself

First off I do expect the DWR to take care of the herds here in Utah. As us Sportsman and Woman entrust them to take care of it.

We Pay Taxes, Permit fees and Donate to Wildlife that gos to the DWR to manage these things..

As for the lions I think your math is right but it will never work out that way there is to many factors.. But I will say that the harvest of those lions did help out but the deer are in such low numbers that you are not going to see those number come back in 5 years

Yes a larger problem is the people

"we build homes on their winter range, we tear up their summer range"

That is why we need to feed in winters like this and like someone posted earlier we should have started months ago to make it work... Deer can NOT eat alfalfa apples and oranges this time of year like elk can! Well they can eat it but they will just die with all that in there guts they can not get any nutrition out of these items..Deer might look like elk but there life's are much different. Elk graze and Deer browse. Deer can get through the winter with sage bark limbs and such where elk can eat about anything and make it.. Deer are much more complex there digestive system is way different.. And I wish I could explain with words. But all I can say is if you take out a bale of alfalfa and let the deer eat it and thats all they eat well there as good as dead they will have full stomachs but they will not be able to turn that alfalfa into energy it like trying to make a fire with water it wont work..

"Blaming everyone else"

No I am trying to get the word out that Colorado is doing some good things for Mule deer and Utah it seams is always sitting back saying well lets not do anything today that we can do tomorrow...

I want to see some changes.

Yes there are to many tags in Utah's general hunts!!

How do we fix it without loosing money for the DWR

We cut tags back 50% and double the price of the tags

Sounds simple to me but I am sure it is not that easy

I say if you was born on a odd year you can purchase a tag on a odd year. If there is conflict with family's you can make a request with the DWR to have some changes done but you can only hunt every other year....

That would cut the hunting pressure 50% if that is not enough then we need to have some management hunt that people could do like the dedicated hunter program where hunters can only harvest 2 deer in 3 years or in this case 2 deer in 4 or 5 years but they can hunt state wide in return for there time and efforts.

micro management

Yes it works.. And yes I feel Utah could do this very easy.
Make many smaller units that can be managed for what deer are there now and what deer migrate there later.

I could go on and on but we have all heard the story's. But now we need to get the DWR to listen and or do something other then stand there and say

" Some deer will succumb to winter. Thats reality"
and
" well we will see what happens in a few weeks"

Tell me I am wrong I very well could be but it feels right sounds right and by looking at Colorado it looks right so can I say it is right????
