just thought I would share the elk hunts I was involved in last year. it started out with my nephew and 2 friends who drew out for the early elk here in Utah. it was a unit I had hunted a couple times prior so my scouting was mostly taking the other hunters over and showing them where we would hunt and how the unit was layed out. we showed up a few days early and got into the elk quick, no rut activity just bulls, with more than a few 1st day shooters. The morning before the hunt we finally found a bull with cows and that night we went back and found a good bull out on the flats with a bunch of cows. One of the other hunters found another big herd with a good bull. So after a quick nights sleep we were poised and ready to go at light. After a quick locate we had the bull down. He was not the 9x8 we found earlier in the week but we were happy with him

After cutting up and packing the bull down to the bikes we got in contact with the other hunters and found they had not scored but one of the hunters had spotted a good bull but did not connect so while my brother and nephew took his bull back to camp I went to relocate the bull. After a long day of watching and waiting he finally scored on his bull not bad for a guy who was scheduled to have his hip replaced and could not walk very far. the next part of this adventure shows that there are some good people out there. after buddy killed his bull a group of local hunters had that bull down to the truck and had it loaded for them

The last tag to fill was for a friends wife who had some physical limitations. going blind with a reduces ability to hike. she had a permit for the DWR to hunt early and late and with the use of a vehicle
I took them up to the top of the MTN to wait for one of the good bulls we spotted earlier in the week, hopefuly the 9x8. shortly after setting up we got the call that a good bull was spotted on the other side of the MTN. after more than a bit of urgent coaching we made the long walk over the MTN to find this bull, after getting them set up I walked the ridge down to bump the bull and his herd to them. After rolling boulders and throwing more rocks than most pitchers will throw all season she made good on the shot opportunity and had her bull on the ground

now the work began, I left them at the kill site and made the long hike back to the rhino. when I got around the MTN i waited to see my buddys bull. the locals showed up and after learning where the bull was and the condition of the hunter they pretty much took control of the packout. it was a nasty canyon steep and nasty. put it this way they took that can-am where a mountain goat would not have went and well after mid-nite the bull and hunters back at camp safe and sound.

After all that I had my chance for a bull in Wyoming.
I showed up 4 days before the hunt and about 7 min into the hunt my brother had this bull spotted and shortly after I had him on the ground

Well done Jim!
That's a lot of wapiti in one year and some real first-class trophy animals.
Way to get 'er done!

Since we are normally the ones to be helping it was a nice change of pace to be on the receiving end of it. This makes over 10 good bulls we have taken in this unit with hopefully a few more next year.
