with the currant situation with the all the snow and the deer suffering CAN THE DWR IMPOSE A STATEWIDE BAN ON SHED HUNTING?

I hope the can and do, i like to look for them, but with the 4 feet in diamond fork, all the problems up north it seems like the thing to do,

i have been "out" in it all winter trapping, i have pulled my line here and am just trapping the desert now.

tonight i witnessed a couple guys going after a big elk that lost one side, they had the one dropper and were going higher, i noticed two black things running WAY ahead of them. i put the glasses on them, black labs. chasing deer.

the deer are in the worst shape i have ever seen, the fawns are just ears moving through the snow after momma. the coyotes are eating well since the deer cant run.

most of them have taken refuge on the road, until a car comes , then the DIVE into oblivion.
the fawn mortality rate will be 100% if we don't do something soon.

This ought to tough a nerve with a few folks on here. Good luck getting people to see the light on this one. Dont you know there are cross country skiers and rabbit chasers that are in the field? Why cant they be there as well.

Its funny, I read about a lot of folks seeing people chasing deer and elk with or without dogs but it seems like nobody on MM has ever spooked a deer on the winter range.

It rediculous that its turned into a damn circus. Hard to believe people would gripe about giving the deer and elk a chance but it happens.

Prism stepped up to the plate this year by donating videos to help the deer in Gunnison and a lot of people sent money to help. I would like to think they would have sent it in regardless of the video and it was awesome to see that kind of support. I hope that sportsmen and women can see that a deer antler just isnt worth the potential damage caused by running these animals till they drop them.

If people would put as much energy into helping these deer as they did trying to pick up a chalk white 2 pt shed we would be a lot better off.

I hope that people start to realize how fragile these deer can be and how they just need a break. People scout them all summer, hunt them all fall, chase them all winter, when does it end?

LAST EDITED ON Feb-02-08 AT 07:13AM (MST)[p]with 4 feet of snow, the only way to look is on a snow machine. not too many people are ambitious enough to foot it through that much snow. if the deer are gonna die its not because of the shed hunters. and to the best of my knowledge, wyoming only closes winter ranges to vehicle traffic until later in the year. the closure does not apply to foot or horse access. this might be different around jackson hole and more populated areas though. if you are going to impose a ban then you have to ban everyone and everything and then you need to enforce the ban. crying about it wont do a thing to stop the problems.

your wrong. they are up there in the snow right now.
you know as well as i do the elk are higher than the deer, up on the south slopes where the snow is not as deep.
i saw 10+ trucks with guys on the hill just today, from trojan. to jollys.

the deer however are in the bottoms, the deep stuff, to get to the elk the "shed hunters" are going right through the deer, pushing them everywhere.

so call it crying if you want, it's not. it is a genuine concern for the deer herds.
with all the work we have done to get the deer #'s back up, this should be an easy choice.

I have seen with my own eyes the dead and dying deer. up past there brisket in snow.

But an elk horn is worth more right...foolish!

a date sportsman,DWR,biologist, and land owners can agree on. i like april 1st. it was fine up north.

I agree with huntsonora, is the shed really worth it, if there was a shed season they could wait for the snow to melt off a little and pick up the same damn shed. As far as shooting dogs chasing deer you bet its legal i was in this same area about three weeks ago and ran into a sheriff I know, he gave me a description of a dog that had been chasing deer and told my if I saw it to shoot it and call him. People like the ones buckstop saw today give shed hunters a bad name, thats why I have pretty much quit shed hunting it used to be fun but now its just a joke.

You want shed hunting banned, but you still want to be able to go out and trap where ever you want? How do you feel when people are pushing to get trapping banned? We are already restricted to death and like others have stated, we don't need more laws passed with very little enforcement. It's unfortunate the Utah DWR is under staffed with law enforcement officers, because we already have laws on the books for wildlife harassment.

It's good that you pulled your line and moved out to the desert, but do you think all trappers have done the same? I know many shed hunters and none of them have been out yet this year nor will they any time soon.(myself included) There are bad apples in every bunch who cause problems for everyone else and the animals.

If they banned shed hunting until April, then what is next? Ban trapping? Ban coyote hunting? Ban mountain lion hunting? Hunters who want to ban or have more restrictions put on anything should be very careful, because who knows what will be next!

Lets stop hunting winter ranges until February? (there are hunts in Utah right now for big game on the winter ranges with several hunters and antlerless tags)

How about we hunt lions in different months? Dogs, winter range, this time of year= MORE pressure then shed hunts IMHO.

How about we enforce the current regulation? When was the last time DWR cited anyone for chasing deer/elk?

shed hunting has ZERO regulations right now(except northern,indian lands, ext)

I would say trapping has almost a zero % negative impact on the deer and elk. and a 100% positive impact on the deer and elk, predator control has always had a positive impact on fawn survivability rates.

I have yet to see a trapper pushing deer and elk with dogs.

If shed hunting had the same # of regulations, stupid laws, anti's everywhere. you would never go shed hunting period.

so if thats what it takes to get a season for sheds so be it. carefull what you wish for.

i agree,. enforce the laws we have, but there few regs on shed hunters.

and if a trapper,hunter,quad rider,HORSEMAN,houndsman, sunday driver, is harassing wildlife ,they should be held accountable.

i would like some regs in black and white on shooting dogs running deer, i've had many a chance.

BCBOY is 100% correct. Your carring capacity is overinflated for the available habitat. Your deer habitat does not just include the spring, summer, fall ranges! It also includes the winter range which has been taken over by humans. So if you do not have the winter range habitat, when mother nature dishes out a rough winter it will automaticly put your deer herds back in check for the overall carring capacity for the overall habitat.

The only way we as humans can do anything is to artifically supplement(feeding programs)the carring capacity of these missing winter ranges. Unfortunatley, this solution has many negative impacts, but since we as deer hunters want large herds we will have to live with these negatives. And for some, a large negative may turn out to be a ban on human access to these limited winter ranges.

Snow is a houndsmen's friend. There are dogs that can run dry ground, but the vast majority of the lionhunters out there need the snow. Take away the winter from the houndsmen and you are taking away another hunter's ability to do what they love. What makes deer hunters any more important than lion hunters?
A guy can run this argument many different ways. Ban cross-country skiiers, sledders, snowshoeing, bird watching what have ya, just so one user group, deer hunters, can have lots of deer to kill come the fall??? Do you think the general public care about hunters having BIG BUCKS to kill? But....they definately care if their rights to enjoy the outdoors are restricted for the sake of the deer hunter's rights. One winter does not mean that muleys will go extinct. There still will be muleys running around Utah come the spring and a new batch will be born and the cycle will continue. Now, from a hunter's perspective he'd love to have a ton of deer to hunt come fall, so seeing nature at her hard-hearted best, kinda sucks. But that is nature. And the general public who are buying those new houses that are being built on former winter ranges, they simply don't care. You start taking away their rights, then they will care. They will care enough to vote their way and hunters will be left in the cold.
Now, back to banning other hunters. That is a simple way to shoot yourself in the foot. Ban lion hunting in the winter, then the next step is to ban it all together just like some other states, California is an example. Then you'll have the lions mess havoc on your deer herds and you'll be fighting a whole new battle won't ya???

It's not rocket science. If you have mass amounts of deer dying, then your winter ranges can not support the amount of deer you've got. You can not say, back in the year such and such, we had this giant number of deer, but now, we only have this amount. Therefore Utah can handle X amount more deer. Why? Because your winter ranges have changed. I'm sure like much of the West, your winter ranges are being eaten up by development. And according to what I've read here, your remaining winter ranges are in dire shape due to drought and other factors. Therefore, if you grow X amount of deer above what the current winter range can support, you'll have mass dieoffs.

I don't know when your deer hunts are all done down there, but I can tell ya up here, most houndsmen won't turn out until after deer season. Why? Because they don't want their dogs shot by deer hunters that see a dog baying and so therefore it must be chasing deer.

You are right about me playing devil's advocate. I know the situation you guys are facing isn't nice. I do think houndsmen are the least of your worries though.

We were in the same situation last winter in Northern BC. Was one of the worst winters they had in decades. The previous bio maintained very restrictive seasons because he thought Trophy hunting is where it's at. Had the deer, elk and moose herds way above carrying capacity. The new bio came in and wanted to drop the mule deer herd by 50%. He didn't have a chance to do it though because the winter did it for him.
Currently we have several Regions above carrying capacity. Should we get back to the normal winters that we are used to, there is no doubt there will be large dieoffs.

I think Browtine got it right. Your are right BC in that it is not rocket science. When you have mass accumulations of snowfall, that equates into deer not being able to access and utilize available forage. You can have adequate winter range to support thousands of deer but if they cannot access the forage, the majority of them will most likely not see spring time come around. Yes, in certain areas winter range has suffered to development more than others. But equating that to our herds being above capacity is ridiculous.

Our deer herds here in Utah have never been the same after the 92-93 die off. They have continued to rebound over the last few years, and we should do what we can to try and mitigate another huge die-off.

THE SHED HUNTER IS A YOUNG PUNK ALL GUNG-HO ABOUT FINDING HIS FIRST ELK SHEDS!!!

WELL HE'S BEEN PUSHING GAME AROUND NOW FOR AT LEAST TWO WEEKS!!!

WELL FRICK!!!

AT THE EARLIEST ON AVERAGE IT WILL BE MID MARCH BEFORE THE BIGGER BULLS START DROPPING THEM!!!

THIS JACK-ASS HAS BEEN AND WILL HAVE BEEN PUSHING ELK AROUND 2 FRICKEN MONTHS BEFORE THEY HIT THE GROUND!!!

DOES THIS TELL YOU WHAT KIND OF TARDS WE HAVE???

why state wide again? what about us southern Utah guys? if you think there is belly deep snow on the winter ranges in Washington county, your up in the night! and the same with many other southern Utah county's. enforce the laws on the books! don't make new laws that wont do a damn thing for the deer herds anyway. just because there are a few chumps out there is no reason to ban shed antler hunting and all outdoor activities from dec to april! instead of getting on the internet and bitching about it try picking up your cell phone and calling the proper authority's and getting those chumps busted! ween out the ones that make us look bad!

When they start feeding the deer just keep all the dumb asses out of there and let the government trapper take care of the predators. Thats about all we can do because we cant stop all the idiots out there.
