I want a good late season deer hunt in Colorado, I am a nonresident and have 6 points already. Am willing to wait 5 or 6 more years if needed. I dont just want an average buck, hoping for a 200 incher or better. What area should I be looking at?

LAST EDITED ON Feb-10-08 AT 03:30AM (MST)[p]If youre thinking of going through an outfitter look to the Eastern Plains almost everything East of I-25 is PRIVATE and big bucks come of the plains every year.

Things might be far different 5 or 6 years down the road than they are right now. But for now, all you have to do is subscribe to about 3-4 different magazines and check the draw odds to see where the best bucks are coming from.

Good luck; you have a LOT more patience than I ever will.

The eastern plains is a good place to use those points, but because all the private ground out there, it is hard to find a good place to hunt unless you live in the state and can go out and knock on some doors. There are some excellent places to use those points and I would start by looking out near Rangely on the western slope. That area has consistently produced some monster muleys, and alot of it is public property. I work with an outfitter up there and have sent him 6-7 hunters over the past 3-4 years and all have taken bucks over 185" and there were bigger ones seen, just not taken yet. If you are looking for a good hunt on public ground, this is a good place to look into. The outfitter I work with offers some great hunts at very reasonable prices. I think his deer hunts are 2200.00, fully guided, all inclusive.

I agree. Do some homework, and I am sure you will find a good place to use those points. Boy, things can get a bit opinionated in here I see. I like that, good debate is always a good thing. I definitely am not an expert on all of Colorados big game species or regulations and I am not sure anyone is, I just try and give the most honest response I can. Good hunting everyone.

You should start by not giving false information coloradooutdoors. Sorry to rip on you but you might want to brush up on your reg reading. No, I dont clain to be an expert, either.

As for the original post....
THERE IS NO 200" DEER IN COLORADO!! So use your points and just hunt!!
lol

Well I will definitely do some more readings on the regs. And I don't believe I was giving out false information, I was just wrong, please don't tell me you are never wrong. Oh, and no 200" deer in Colorado huh. Well you should do some research yourself, their are 200" deer taken in Colorado every year. The muley on my website with the wide spread on my hunting page is a buck that scored over 205", taken on the eastern plains of Colorado, hunter was Fred Turner, outfitter was Adventures Wild, so they do exist, just not around every corner, but taken every year in Colorado.

I would have to agree. Just because a unit takes a bundle of points to draw doesn't necessarily mean you will get, or even see a buck that would score high. There are big bucks out there and you just have to do some homework and then work hard to get at 'em. Good hunting everyone

coloradooutdoors did you see the 'lol' below my statement?
Yes I do know there is 200' deer in CO, I have a 218 nontypical hanging in my house taken in Northern CO a few years ago.
I was being sarcastic.
Jeff

I will second the first post. Rather than getting worried about where to apply, feed some deer and hope they make it through, then go from there.

I believe Colorado has 200" deer, but points won't "buy" one.
