Does anyone know the procedure on what to do if you find a dead head, with elk antlers in tact in the State of Montana? Can you keep it or do you have to check it in? Any input would help. Thanks

If it died of natural causes (winter kill, lion kill) you can keep the head. You don't have to report it but if it is a big head I would just to be on the safe side. It is legal to keep an head that died of unnatural causes like an unrecovered hunter kill or a road kill.

Antlerradar - Is there a typo in your message? Otherwise your post says it's LEGAL to keep a deadhead whether natural or unnatural death? Most places I'm aware of you'd need to report it and the G&F determines whether it's natural or unnatural to avoid potential poaching issue.

That is a typo. Thanks for pointing it out. It is illegal to keep a dead head that died of unnatural causes.
You are not required to report a dead head butI would report a large dead head just to avoid and questions that may come up latter
