Health of the deer in the Book Cliffs?

My brother and I "should" draw Book Cliffs rifle tags this year and I was wondering how the herd looks after all of the snow and cold weather. Do any of you basinites (bess, slamdunk, TripleK) have any insights or observations on the health of the animals? Has anyone else been out there to see the bucks and if you have, what are the snow depths? Thanks for any information that you are willing to share.

slam isnt a basinite so i bet he will call you on that, jake has been out there a few times and he said they look like they are doing ok. If they do the antler growth should be awesome good luck on drawing your tag.

Man....i've been called a lot of sh*t, but NEVER a "basonite"!!

I hope all you kill is a two point in the books for that one!! LOL

TripleK can maybe help ya, she's an official basonite, so is bessy, they may have some inside info.

Well actually...our resident experts on the Books would be Daxter and some guy named bonepiler. I think bonepiler spends quite a bit of time out there and I know Daxter does. They'll be the guys to know. It's been so snowy and cold that I haven't been anywhere since November.

Hey rutnelk,
Took a ride out there a few days ago with 'founder' and from what we could see the deer looked pretty healthy. There was a bunch of snow, about 15 inches to 2 feet in most places and some of it was crusted snow. The deer were walking on top of it and getting around pretty good. Lots of little bucks with a couple of decent bucks still roaming around. Most of the deer were bunched together and not in some places we normally see them. I would suspect that in the next week or two once we get some of the snow burned off those southern slopes they'll spread back out. We didn't get off of the roads and didn't venture too far, but I wouldn't hesitate in putting in for the books, there is always a few gaggers taken out there.

I have not spent much time out there the past few weeks Triple K. The mac fishing at the Gorge has been taking my time lately and it has been a hell of a lot warmer ice fishing on the Gorge than it has been in the basin. Once the snow melts down a bit and it warms up, I suppose I will be spending "a little" time out there.

As FSTOP said, the snow was upwards of 28" on the Northern Book Cliffs winter ranges last I went out. The southern Book Cliffs winter ranges have much less snowfall. The deer seem to be doing fine out there so far. I wouldn't worry too much about a die-off in the Books because of the winter. Can't say the same thing about poaching. That seems to take off a good share of the higher end bucks each year. The Books will be just fine, like they always are, a lot of 20-24 inch bucks and a handfull of bigger ones will be killed next fall.

yep, have to agree with bonepiler, would'nt be too worried. Spent quite a bit of time out there trapping this year. there is more snow than there usually is. alot out high, but there are bare south sides and the deer look great.

Thanks for all of the information guys (and gal). That's what makes this site so great; a lot of good people out there willing to help out a fellow hunter.

slam, I was planning on shooting the first 2 point I see so your wish may come true. And once again I am sorry for linking you with that Jeff Gordon lovin cat, "ole bessy".

Ditto on what folks have said. Tons of snow on the top which should be a good thing for the summer range browse. The middle elevations where the deer are wintering look good. There is quite a bit of snow, but lots of brush above the snow line and south and west facing slopes are bearing off. The brush looks a little rough, but a good wet growing season ought to help with that. I did find one dead doe the other day, but I pulled her jaw and she was ancient, probably died an age related death. Fawns still look good. It started out pretty rough out there with lots of snow all at once and really cold temps, but things have improved dramatically. I would say the winter in the Books is milder than down at the lower elevations in the Basin and on the south slope.

Unless we see a dramatic change in weather patterns should be a really good year to draw a tag (come on 7 points do something for me). Buck to doe ratios are high, the average harvest age from 2007 is almost as high as the Pauns, with some good antler growth precip I predict some good bucks this fall.

Since I am rutnelks smarter, tougher and better looking brother, this is good news for us with 8 points.

As he said, thanks for all the info. You guys(and gal) are great.

Now if we draw a tag, I hope y'all are just as sweet.
I know Bessy will be. Won't ya Bess?

I was out there yesterday, there is still alot of snow, but the deer are doing good, it warmed up into the 40's while I was there and everything was melting pretty good.

Whats even better is all the snow is keeping alot of people out of most areas so the deer are not being chased around all over hell, and theres to much snow for the ATVs.

This is the first year I've went out there and not saw ATV tracks going everywhere this time of year.

This is all in the NE corner of the books, I couldnt tell you how it is everywhere else.

Dax...how do you know the avg. harvest age from 07'? I shot a buck out there last year and have been waiting on my tooth data....

I was also waiting for my tooth data from last year. I finally call the DWR last week and they looked it up for me.

All the deer in the Books are dead. None survived the winter. It is not longer a good area to hunt. Just stay away from it.

Come on now Roy, don't go breakin my, don't go breakin my, don't go breakin my heart. Sorry, that was an old song that came to mind when I was typing. Roy, just leave Texas for a week and came out for a good ole Book Cliffs deer hunt this October. If you show me all of your secret spots I'll give you an ice cold root beer and maybe a hug; never mind on the hug.

Hey has any one seen any turkeys on the books? I would love to go scout for turkey, deer, elk out on the books. If anyone has any info I would be much obliged. Love the stories and comments made on this forum!!!!

No all the turkeys are dead. They didn't make it through the winter. The Book Cliffs are no longer a good place to hunt - anything. Just stay away.

My brother saw about 20 turkeys and only 4 were toms. He said, the deer looked healthy and saw some nice nubbins on 2 good sized deer bodies.
