LE Wasatch Archery Elk

So it looks as if my father and I may have drawn archery elk tags for the Wasatch? I have a couple of issues, I know very little about hunting elk and have never stepped foot in this unit.

I know from previous threads that it sounds like its on the decline but we are excited as ever to be hunting elk. We will plan on scouting the area as much as possible prior to the hunt.

I am curious on what to expect? 280-300 being a typical bull for the unit? Should we plan on waiting for the last two weeks to hunt with it being closer to the rut?

Any information would be great or even pics from previous archery hunts on the unit.

Thanks,

Season dates arent great this year for any kind of rut activity. Your better iff coming up with a different tatic

My friend had an archery tag there last year. He has chances every day.
We had a 340-350 class bull we chased and had a few chances at him.
The unit is on HUGE decline in numbers for sure but there are still great bulls out there. The season dates this year is AWFUL for rutting activity.
If you want some help PM me.

What is your time and money situation? If I had unlimited of both I'd be on the mountain every second. Do you mind sitting water or spot and stalking? To me getting within bow range with elk is exciting whether he comes in red eyed and drulling (everyone's first choice), or if you sneak up on one bedded. So just do what ever you want. If you could only care about bugling you wait a little later to hit it hard. But with two tags I wouldn't pass much time up if you could be out.

After Labor Day they can light up anytime. If they're not talking much, find areas where they are, cow call a bit with plenty of scent cover and sit tight for an hour. You may be surprised at Bulls slipping in quiet to check you out.

Thanks for the replies guys!! We will try and get a couple of weeks in scouting and I will take off two weeks for work and my dad is retired so he will be there for the duration.

Week 1, set up on water hole, or transition trails between bed and feeding area:
Week 2, set up on a WALLOW, not a water hole, a WALLOW
After that, listen and intercept.

Tree stands, trail cameras, and hiking will dramatically increase your odds.

Good luck!!!

I am also going for my first any bull elk on the Wasatch LE archery hunt. I'm ready to scout hard all summer. Thank you MuleyMiner for starting this thread. Are any of you experienced archery elk hunters willing to mention areas in the unit where I should begin scouting? I have trail cams, truck, and wheelers. Just don't know the unit or even where to begin scouting. Thanks for your help!!

I would agree with the above, I had the tag last year and ended up taking a 290ish bull. The only thing I would add is this hunt has a fairly low success rate and with the early dates I would bet it would be tougher this year.

280-300 bulls are the norm for rifle hunt on this unit, there are some big bulls 350 + and a fair number of 300 - 350 type bulls, but I wouldn't let anything in the 280 range walk with a bow.

As far as where to hunt I don't think it matters much I would just pick an area and stick with it I don't think there are many areas that are a lot better then others the entire unit has elk.
