74-yr old finally draws

My Pops finally drew a bull tag, AW Paunsaugunt. I have not been on the unit for 6 years, and am looking for general info such as road conditions/closures, any typical pattern of elk activity and the like. If any of you would be willing to point a direction in addition, then I'll take that with appreciation. My father has never heard a bull bugle, let alone been in the woods chasing Ole' Stinky, and I'd like to give him a great experience.

LAST EDITED ON May-22-15 AT 07:42PM (MST)[p]If I had the tag I would check the Skutumpah Ranch, off the Glendale Bench road, west of the Loop Road off the Crawford Road,

-the ridge east of the creek/river at the Kanab Creek intersection,

-and the meadow, at night, in Horse Hollow (off the Robinson Canyon road.)

-Years ago there was a good herd of elk west the north fork of the Kanab Creek road, way out on the benches above the Hatch-Pole Canyon area but I haven't seen any out there recently.

Honestly, there hasn't seem to be much support for elk on the Paun over the last ten years and I think a lot of the elk that we used to see on top have been thinned out and what elk are left down there are below the pinks, on the Skutumpah Ranch level. Or it seems so to me.

Predator, be sure and get information for others as my information is a little dated at present, I'd call Travis Roundy, the Taxidermist in Glendale, he'll generally have excellent and current information.

Thanks 2L, I am glad to gear Travis is still in business. He was good to me 20 years ago when I had a deer tag. I will check out your info, and appreciate the help.

Predator - I had that tag two years ago and any help I may give you I certainly will. All I can tell you is where I went and what roads I was on plus the location of my kill. I was actually with Travis' dad when I got mine. This is all in the lower end of the unit.

Congrats to your Dad Predator!! Hope he has a great hunt. I bowhunted down there for deer in 2003 and saw a few elk over on Whitmans Bench (or Whitemans).

My Dad and I also ran into a really nice bull (340-350 class) right near Crawford Pass. Outside of that I don't have much experience on the Pauns for elk and that was quite a few years ago.
