Manti rifle

My cousin drew the early rifle on the manti. Was wondering about good camping spots . Also is there a place to camp that's centrally located ? What caliber of bulls does one expect ? Thanks in advance

This unit is very large. you're going to want to figure out which areas you want to hunt, because it's too big to try and hunt it all. There are plenty of camping spots on the north end along skyline drive. In the central portion, most of the camping is along Miller's Flat road, including a few established campgrounds. Not as familiar with the southern end of the unit.

That's what we're in the process of figuring out. Getting ideas and then hopefully get out there for at least 2 scouting trips prior to season. I think he had 14 points to draw non resident . What do you think is a realistic goal for size of bull ? Thanks for you reply

I would hit South Skyline drive by Cleveland Lake or Huntington Lake. ITs a very good dirt road with lots of canyons going east and west. When I had the tag, I saw 30+ bulls in Birch creek. Its been a few years, but we saw tons of elk in there. I always see a few DANDY bulls right in Fairview canyon too. You can get on top and walk down to the canyon road. I always see elk in those little side canyons right there too. Just some good areas to hit. When I had the tag (archery) friday night we saw A GIANT in Fairview canyon. People were watching it all night and kept talking it was 400". It was a very good bull, but close to 370. I tried for him for a few days and never saw him again, but he was in velvet and I bet he went south to the private after that opening weekend of the Archery hunt.

Thanks guys much appreciated. The hunt won't come soon enough. It will be awesome no matter what. Is it pretty steep and rugged or is it milder country ? Say as steep as the nebo for comparison

Pm me and I will give the info I have on the Ephraim side. The biggest problem your gonna have is picking an area and sticking to it, it's a huge unit.

I am running into the same issues. I have the Muzzy tag and am having a hard time focusing in on one area. We went scouting on the North end of the unit last weekend and found some good areas and actually saw some nice bulls with good growth already. I know the South end a bit so I still need to go down there and look and then again by Fairview. I am not sure if I am just spinning my wheels or what I need to be doing. I put 200 miles on the RZR last weekend checking areas I had been told about and plan on putting at least 3x that in the coming months checking other areas. I am excited though it is an awesome area and I love getting to know new spots.

I will assume by camping you mean with a trailer. If so, Fairview and Ephraim and 12 mile will not destroy your trailer getting up them. I hunt from Ephraim to Six Mile, and that time of year(early rifle I guess) you can trailer right off skyline. SHEEP. There are a couple of them, and they can help determine where not to go. My advice would be to pick one or two canyons, and STAY there. The Manti is so big and is soo accessible you literally can spend all day just riding around. That time of year you also have the ATV crowds, they will help determine where not to go. Sadly the DWR decided to destroy this hunt by over tagging and killing cows, so there are a lot of elk, but unlike 10-15yrs ago, the quality is WAY down. Dont' pass on too many in the 350 range, you could get lucky, but realistically, 330-350 is very good on this unit. Regardless, it is a blast to hunt!

I believe we are going to tent camp. Thanks for the info hoss. I think it's set that we are headed to Utah Labor Day weekend and scouting for a few days. I don't think a 350 bull would get passed. it will be nice to get there and get the lay of the land versus looking at maps. Thanks for the help guys. I know the nebo and wasatch a little so if I can return the favor pm me .

I had this tag last year. I shot a bull that would have scored 360 and some change if he had not busted off his whale tail fighting a bull the morning I shot him. I followed this bull for 3 days before getting a shot and all the while I was in and out of sheep. That is a myth I used to believe but after hunting the Manti for big bulls three different times, sheep have no effect on bulls. I also hunted near an atv trail. I parked over a mile up the road and walked in, and was amazed that when I was in among the elk the talking would stop when they heard a wheeler go by and then when it was gone, they would start talking again. I ended up shooting my bull 1/4 mile from an atv trail but had walked over a couple miles to get to where I shot him. Made the pack out nice but I never would have found him had I not got off the machine and walked. Find an area you like and want to hunt and start from there. I hunted solo most of my hunt and that made it a bit tougher but there were bulls everywhere I went to scout. Some in the 300" class. I saw a few over 320, one being a 5 point my bull chased off that might have been 320 but looked awesome. I would have shot either but my bull gave me a better shot. THe bulls got really vocal the last few days of the hunt, right before the muzzy hunt started. not sure if this link will work but here is the story of my hunt last year.
