well gotta admit, all these threads about utah and c.o. are kind of depressing, at least some parts of north america are getting it easy this year, i think albertas winter kill this year will be around maybe 1%

almost sounds impossible

almost, but isnt
temps out here are around the -5 to + 10 degrees celcius range lately
no snow on the ground in alot of places, and if there is snow, its no deeper than 1-2 feet tops

I bet there will be a decent chance that our next 300 inch non typical will come from north of the border especially if the banana belt weather continues. Notice I didn't say GLOBAL WARMING?

What part of Alberta do you live in???????

I live in northern Alberta and the Winter Kill is going to be a lot higher then 1%.Last year was are worst winter in a decade and it was nothing compared to this winter. We have had way more snow and longer cold snaps this year.Last year there were some areas of Alberta that had 60 to 70% winter kill on Moose and deer and this year will be somewhere in that range.

muzzy125,

I'm curious as to where you are. I've got friends in Alberta, both around Lethbridge and in the Peace River Country. And there's a guy from Calgary here working with us in Wyoming right now. They are not talking that tough of a winter. Any specific would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Does seem impossible...

i live in calgary, but i have family all over, up in wainright, edmonton, down in lethbridge, and all of them are saying this winter has been super mild
you must live pretty far north, cuz the weather patterns and forecast are pretty warm for most of alberta
and 60-70% is alot smaller wen you think about all of alberta, its not like the whole deer population is way up north

Here in BC we have been stacking mild winters on top of mild winters. This year is no different. Don't know of any areas of this province where it is looking dire. Last year we had significant winter kill in the Peace (North East corner) but the rest of the province faired really well. The biggest concern our ungulate populations are facing as of late is a very very high wolf population.

I live 2 1/2 North of Edmonton.

Sure it is warm now but it hasn't been.

I think 60 - 70% in any area is a lot, especially considering how many animals were winter killed last year.

Southern Alberta is not being hit hard but i think it is a long ways from a mild winter.

i beg to differ
this year most areas south of edmonton have recieved maybe 10-24 inches of snow combined, over the course of the winter months
last winter was definitely much harder on the deer, yet still easily survivable for the vast majority, as the temps havent been staying very cold for very long, and flat terrian with snow on it is alot easier for an animal to traverse than the mountains to the south of the border

Well I don't live in the South so i will take your word for it Sir.Maybe I should put my Mule draw in for Drumheller instead of Peace River this Year.:)

i would recommend it thats for sure
last season was almost ridiculous for the number of deer running around, and theres no lack of headgear on them either
its draw zone yet you tend to get your buck tags in two-three years, and they are handing out 1-2 extra doe tags with your doe draws.
its normal to see 80-120 deer in a day out there
