deer put down or dragged dead off a 2-mile stretch of roadway in SLC in 32 days.

That's only 4 days a week during 10 hours a day. Dunno how many more my compadres are having to shoot or drag away on the other 2 shifts.

I haven't had to kill so many deer since 2002. It breaks my heart. The little button buck last night was terrified, curled up in a gutter with two broken legs, trying hard to hide from all the humans.

At least I got to touch his head just before I had to pull the trigger.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-21-08 AT 02:57PM (MST)[p]A few years back my grandfather took photos of 12 dead deer all laying dead on the same day between Pleasant Grove and the mouth of American Fork Canyon (maybe three miles at the most).

I think they clean those things up . . . but they have been getting hit hard again this year.

Tough story Lisa. Glad you put a humane end to things though. The whole state herd is suffering hard.

About 4-years ago they actually showed that stretch on the news in Utah. I guess there was a debate on perhaps a fence line or something. But they were afraid that it would funnel the deer to the freeway and into Thanksgiving Point.

I think they need more warning signs at night from Dec to March. Some really nice size deer have been killed on that 2-mile stretch.I actually called the fish and game on a 25" 4 X 4 that was currled up suffering on the side that same year.

What they need to do is put lower speed limits Out there by where the deer winter. I was driving up in pleasant grove yesterday and the speed limit was i think 45-50 mph. Not sure. I Didn't go the speed limit. i went 35 mph at the most. I was afraid a deer would jump out in front of me.

Hang in there Lisa.
Thanks for the update, no matter how ugly it may be.
These deer sure are getting a bad year from many avenues.

I have an idea. I have said it before. Why not put in PERMANENT FEEDING STATIONS?

Feed the critters in the same spot every year, my theory is in 5-6 years most of the critters will know where to go in the winter to eat and stay out of trouble. Strategically place the feeding stations where the animals don't have to cross major roads, thus reducing greatly the automobile mortality rate.

They do it in other states, hell we do it for elk right here in Cache Valley. Why not have other spots?

I think it's a good idea, but again it's only my idea.

Funny how you never hear the anti hunting community bitching about road kills!!! They would rather take our rights away to hunt and help prevent this kind of waste. Car's kill 10x the number of deer every year hunters do but you will never hear the granola crunchers complain about that...Lisa, sorry you have to be a part of that but thank you for doing the right thing.

Seems like there's been at least 3 or 4 a week killed on 92 and a few elk were hit too. There are a lot more dead ones this year than last.

This is not a highway nor a freeway. This is just a city street, residential mix, where the speed limit is 35......

I don't know the name of the canyon, but i was saddened by the number of dead deer I saw on Saturday travelling I-80 westbound from Wyoming to Ogden. The only good news, it appeared the snow was melting, and hopefully the deer were able to move away from the freeway to higher ground. I guess another way to look at it, I wish we had enough deer left in Oregon to have the problem.

Oh well.

That is one of the best suggestions I have heard. Lower the speed limit during the winter.
