Hey guys...I drew a great late Idaho tag for November. I have never had a late tag before. I know the area very well from hunting it for 25 years. There is access up many of the canyons, but a lot of ground you have to trek into also. Do any of you guys have some good pointers for hunting late season bulls in the backcountry? I.e...do the larger bulls hang with bachelor herds or solo, do I need to get away from people and cow herds to realistically find a high quality bull? I will have access to ponies if I get something back in there, but I am planning on throwing on the backpack and covering country! If anybody out there has hunted this country (idaho/montana border), and has good advise, feel free to chirp at me!

I have hunted that late hunt several times. We have killed some good bulls for sure.
You will see groups of 1-3 good bulls together.
You will see 10-12 rag horns together
You will see 20-40 cows, calfs, spikes, and a few rag horns together.
The big bulls will be like hunting big bucks. In holes where they cannot get bugged.

The weather can really help on this hunt.

Good luck

Thanks, bowhunt! I appreciate the info. Would you mind sending me a pm, I would like to discuss where you have hunted more in detail, if you don't mind. I have hunted most all of this country except the west side of birch cr in 58 quite alot, and would like to pull a real good bull out if I can. I know several holes like you describe! ;)

The advice that I have is just be prepared if you do get snow to change elevations as the animals play the up and down game as the snow comes and goes. Good luck I too drew a late hunt in 60-2 just next to you. There are a few whoppers that hide out down around the alfalfa fields and low pockets of brush that you wouldn't expect.

I appreciate the info, idahoan! Congrats on the tag!(that was my second choice tag...) I am hoping for snow, on the theory that the big bulls will hang out high longer. I have several areas that have very limited access into them that I plan on hunting. I saw the fish cops pull the big bull that is in the gas station in Dubois out when he was poached back in '94, and I have a friend that got a 375 bull out of Scott several years ago. I really can not wait for November!!!

speaking of the lowland bulls, I busted a 330+ bull and a bunch of cows out from behind Sullivin ranch several years ago. Woulda never thunk...too bad it was spike bulls and there were none! ;)
