Anyone on the forum know much about mule deer hunting ND? I'm a nonresident and would like to know more about the draw system.

Thanks, Preston

Probably have to do it the ole fashioned way... research it yourself. I've done it for NE, WY, MT, and CO. Many times they are complicated but just read them over and over. They sink in eventually. Amazingly every state does it differently. I tried to go to their website but it must not be working. The link is below. Good luck.

I looked into it a while back and decided not to do it. They only allocate 1% of mule deer tags to nonresidents. They do have a point system, but I can't remember the details like price etc. Let us know what you find out.

Leonard,

The application period is in early June. Daxter is correct in that they only allocate 1% of tags to nonresidents. Residents can usually draw any hunt by 5 or six years--in part because they exponentially amplify (cube) the bonus points after 4 years. Unfortunately, they really do not provide information about draw odds for non-residents. I really don't know how long it takes to draw a non-res permit in the better units (mostly near Theodore Roosevelt National Park). Although everybody that applies has a chance to draw, you really need to apply for at least four or five years to get your points amplified by the exponent of 3. You must front the $180 tag fee to apply but they refund all but $3 to apply--that is one of the most reasonable non-res tag fees that I know of.

There are some good public land hunts, but much of it is checkerboard. You can hunt anything that is not posted, but I would guess that most of the better private areas are posted.

I have been applying in ND for three or four years--mostly because I grew up there and would like a chance to the hunt mule deer in the region. I have never seen or heard of any real monster mule deer bucks comming out of ND--but those NoDaks keep a pretty low profile.

Thanks for the help guys. We will be moving up there to work for the next year or so, and I'm excited about the hunting (big game and birds). Is there a better chance to draw a archery tag, from the website it looks like first come first serve?

Preston

yeah you can get an archery tag pretty easy and that is anytime now, so id fill out the app and get it in ASAP. it is first come with a quota. real long season too.

we hunted there last year and did ok, 3 muley's in 3 days. the hunt is during the rut which really helps things out. there are real good bucks there, dont let anyone fool you but it wont be like colorado.

good luck to ya.
