I took this buck in Idahos Unit 29. After seeing only little bucks for 4 days I finally caught up to this buck. It took about an hour of straight uphill hiking/crawling to reach him just before sundown.
This was my first trip to Idaho.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-27-08 AT 11:40AM (MST)[p]Nice buck and great pictures.

Is that over the counter? I am not familiar with the zones/rules in Idaho?

Did you do the head/scull yourself?

Nice buck, Andy! It's funny how much bigger a rack looks off the body with no ears to judge it by, huh? Who did the skull? Is there CWD up there or were you able to bring it back to Cali to do it?

Steve

Unit 29 and most of Salmon Region is OTC (within the total NR quota for Idaho). A regular deer tag (as opposed to a whitetail only tag) is valid for any regular deer tag general seasons in the state. No, no CWD has been documented in ID.

CWD or not, you're not allowed to bring the scull into CA unless the taxi work is already done. Had a friend make the mistake a couple of years ago. It was a costly error!

LAST EDITED ON Mar-28-08 AT 01:24AM (MST)[p]I did boil the skull myself.I had some helpful tips from a taxi buddy and this was my first attempt. According to the transport rules you may bring a clean skull that is free of the hide/spinalcord/brain back into ca. So I had to skin the entire skull and pick out the brain after I skinned the buck. It wasnt that bad of a chore if you do it before the hide starts to dry.

Last year coming home from Wyoming, my Dad said that at the check station west of the Ca. line he saw guys cleaning their skulls and skullcaps. They actually had a table set up for hunters to do that.
