Good Hunting pants

I was looking for a pair of hunting pants to wear over my jeans on cold mornings that are easy to take off when the day warms up. With my current pair I get too hot if it warms up later in the day. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,

Louie

I suggest getting wool pants, the surplus ones that aren't very thick and using one layer of long underware. Don't get the thick surplus ones, I only use those when there is a foot of snow or more or very cold.

Use the lighter wool with underware, take off the underware when it warms. This can be a pain, but ususally can find a good place to do this, like on a rock so your soxs don't get dirty or wet.

I second the wool pants idea. You don't need the super expensive ones either, I use a pair of cheap mid-weight wool pants (you can find surplus ones for $10 or buy new ones for <$40)and with a pair of cheap ($10-15) polypropalene themal underwear. When the morning chill has lifted, take the polypropalene off, and the wool breathes so well you are fine. My favorite set up for mid season hunts.

My good wife made me a pair of polar fleece pants with an elastic waste. The pattern is really simple and they have no pockests so I wear a pair of shorts with pockets underneath. They have a lot of room in the legs. The extra room actually makes them more comfortable than denim jeans in the summer, and the material stays warm in the winter. I've never been too hot or cold in them - knock on wood. Quiet and comfortable.

I agree with the polar fleese sweat type pants. When really cold i've used two pair over polipropaline drawers, still with excellent leg room for flexability and easy to remove layers for comfort.

Wear over jeans? Why? Jeans just restict your movement and are heavy. Not to mention you are screwed if they get wet. Get a good set of synthetic or wool long underwear and a good pair of synthetic pants to wear on top. Then when it warms up, just take the long undies off. Top pick would be Sitka Gear's Mountain Pants. The Cabelas Microtex are also pretty good, I just wish they weren't cut so baggy.

+1 on the wool pants for mid to late season.Microtex or sitka for early season. Sitka's 90% pant is suppose to be an alternative to the wool pants. The only draw back to wool is it attracts burs, twigs and everything else. Anyone try the 90% pant for later season hunts?

I didn't like the Sitka Gear mountain pants as they seemed to snag so easily. They were comfy like a good pair of sweatpants but can't take much abuse.

You wear pants when you hunt???!!! I thought everyone wore breechcloths - maybe that was why those guys were laughing when I passed by their stand last year... hmmmmmm....

Buy a XXXL pair Wool pants and have a zipper(the local cleaners will do it out here) put in them the full length of the leg. If you start getting hot you un-zip them or take them off.

+1 for Cabela's Microtex. They are a bit baggy and I had my Wife take them in a bit. Farily cheap too.

I am looking for the same for mid Oct in Wyoming area 89 for Mule deer hunting. I was thinking about wool, but isn't it itchy?

I've killed all my biggest Bucks wearing whatever happened to be laying on my closet floor that morning....

I like my Carhart work pants the Best! Tough and durable they dont get tore up in the high country rocks and buck brush.
Scout all year and hunt in them too!

Best thing I ever bought besides good optics was King of the Mountain wool pants. With long underwear they are super warm and without you don't get too hot plus you don't have to worry if it snows or rains. These pants do not itch and the extra padding in the knees is great plus you can sit on cold rocks or in snow. They are super comfortable and do not make noise in brush. Damn I sound like a salesman but I love those pants except the price.

Yeah - me too - most of the time it's a breechcloth.

I heard that Bess wears assless chaps to hunt in and does very well at the tea bag room at the Purple Helmet bar.
