Hi fellow antler addicts. I have not posted in a couple years but read what you guys have to say almost dailey.I have decided to hunt colorado this year and thought it would be a good time to start posting again and see what you might know about these units in the 4th season since i live 20 hours away from the units and am going to have to do my scouting without ever stepping foot in these units. thankful for any info that is given

Its been the worst winter in years. The deer are suffering. It was an honest -2 below zero this morning and the snow is still pretty deep on the winter range. I would look for another area but since the deadline is tonight, its probably too late for you to do that.

I have talked to the biologist for the unit severel times and he is confident that although there will be some winter kill he has seen many quility older bucks that are still in good health that should make it through the winter.

I have hunted the units a few times and enjoyed my hunts. You might need a point or 2 for a 4th rifle tag, maybe.
Jeff

I applied last year for the 4th rifle tag over there with 1 point and didn't get it.

It's Bush's fault!!!

I have 2 points. Do you think that 4th season in these units is worth using my points.(although it is to late know)

I hunted elk in the Troublesum Basin GMU 18 and on our hunt we saw some nice muley bucks. We were packed in about 10 miles near Wheatly Creek. You would have to put in some hard work but there are a few nice bucks there.

Clearly, these must be the easiest units in Colorado to draw.

Four of us have drawn it 5 years running with zero points.....now that I said that I'll probably miss out this year.

We have never taken a serious trophy out of there, but we have sure seen them.....mostly on private land.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-03-08 AT 06:03AM (MST)[p]Muzzleloader season. We hired David Parri Outfitter to pack us in with our gear,he is very reasonable. He is from Hot Sulfur Springs.

nickmnan,
what season and method?

I drew 4th rifle on my second choice 4 years ago because they upped the tag numbers that year but since then it has changed.

Jeff

LAST EDITED ON Apr-03-08 AT 04:57PM (MST)[p]nickman were you hunting 4th season becouse from what I have found you can not draw that unit for less than 2 points. That being said thank you for the info.

We saw plenty of elk but they were out of range ,had a spike come in to my call to about 25 feet.We had a good hunt not as many elk as further west but not as many hunters either.

First week in November. I don't have my book here, it's in the store, but I am sure that it is the 4th period. #20034000.....I'll check it again tomorrow.

My Bad!!!!!!!!It is 3rd period. Sorry

I just pay the money and my bro in law does the paperwork....

Either way, it is still a great place to hunt and we do well there. Two teens and two of our wives took their first deer from these sections.

We have great camp areas and have met some of the nicest people on earth there.

Some areas are way too far from the road for an old guy like me, but a 3 hour drag, two years running gives me time to think.

I was in Colorado about 7 years ago on a youth elk hunt. I just sort of spotted all these REALLY nice deer (maybe 50 legal bucks from the viewpoint I was on) in the general area, so the following season, we applied.

Drawn it ever since, and have never failed to spot nice bucks. I have not filled my tag every year because I ain't shooting dinks, but our party of between 4 and 10, have never been disappointed.

There are a lot of deer in the area, weather cooperating. The scenery is great, the people we meet are great and most of all.....I just plain like the trip. I better like it....it will cost me $1000.00 just for fuel this year.

We all quit applying/hunting in Utah...people there don't like non-resident hunters like they do in Co......and in spite of the fact that most MM'ers are Utards, they are simply not as friendly.

They make gay jokes about us Californians and I tease them about their extra wives and pet seagulls.

Sounds like I should have a great hunt regardless of if I shoot a big buck or not. What unit are you spending most of your time in or are you jumping around throughout the units.

Sorry i should have been more specific. The question was pointed towards jeremie. I was just wondering because I passed on some photos of bucks we shot last year in these units to a co worker of mine. he said his son in law was going to colorado this year to hunt just curious if your wifes maiden name was morasch.

No my wifes maiden name is not morasch.I found the units by doing things the old fashion way by calling biolagists and any one else thaT MIGHT KNOW MORE THAN i DO ABOUT WHICH UNIT WOOD BE THE BEST PLACE to spend my 2 nonresident points. This unit along with a few others were brought up and I decided this would be a good hunt, with a chance at a dandy buck. How was your experience in these units. Were you happy with the quility of bucks in the units.

not trying to piss you off I was just wondering. Our experience was great. We went 3 for 4 on nice bucks. Should have had 4 buck the other guy missed a buck. We were only there 3 days and came home. Need the weather for the bigger bucks. We are going back in 09 for third season. If you have 2 points I would put in for 4th season. i think the odds are 100% for 4th with 2 points. It is awesome country, I would get there at least 3 days early to acclimate to the elevation. We arrived on a thursday and saturday was opening day we didn't feel so good.

Elkslam I did put in for the 4th season.I will also be arriving 4 days early but I am use to spending any where from 7 to 20 days in the high country on atleast 2 back pack style hunts each season.I will most likely be hunting much lower than I am use to,so this hunt should be physically much easier. Thanks for all the info.If you don,t mind me asking what unit did you consentrate most of your efforts in.
