LAST EDITED ON Nov-06-15 AT 05:13AM (MST) by Founder (admin)[p]Insane place to hunt elk. It was the best and worst hunting I have ever experienced. For those who don't know the caldera please look it up. It used to be the Baca ranch, was sold to the government, and as you can expect they(the government) are well on their way to screwing it up. Hunting was unreal. I seen elk in the 390 range and bulls everyday in the 360 range. We did hunt though! 15 miles hiking each day avg. they closed a lot if roads and areas down for hunting and that was ok. But for some reason the general public and researchers/ scientists could do whatever they F they wanted. We had treehugger hikers that were not suppose to be where hunting was going on (hence the areas closed to hunting for hikers) walk and yell at us from across the canyon. Elk were inbetween us including a 370 type 6x6 I was after, we didn't see that bull again.
We hiked 7+ miles into a hot bed of elk rutting action to have people supposedly researchers, drive down the road above us that we could not use and scare the elk out of the country. We reported the problems on deaf ears because that guy lost his job on Oct 1 when the Feds took it over. There was a double standard to say the least. This place is one of the coolest places to hunt. We as hunters are getting pushed out! I normally don't post anything like this and this wasn't suppose to be a ##### fest. I want everyone that reads this to put them selves it my place and think about what you would do if you had this had happen to you. We are going to loose this place forever to hunting. They say they will keep hunting but I truly believe they are lies. It was a very fun hunt despite the set backs and I had my best friend little bro James to enjoy it all with me. We got this bull the last morning. He was old old. Missing front teeth and a huge body.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-12-15 AT 03:50AM (MST)[p]The first time that i ran across people like that, i was hunting above Silverton Co and had already put in a good hour and a half in the dark to get to where i wanted to be at daylight. Once there I feel like i'm in Elk heaven and tippy toeing all alive just knowing i'm in them somewhere close when here comes about a dozen people on mountain bikes. They're on a trail, moving along slowly and laughing, calling out to each other, and some are singing out loud...

The years between them folks i saw that day and right now this year has been a good long while. I knew then that, that was about the beginning and wondered then if the anti pressure was going to get much worse or if it would "fad" away and simply end. Tell the truth, i'm kinda surprised there's not more of this, "stop hunting by intimidation in the field" than what there has been.

Nice report! Darn fine Bull, sorry to hear the news of your stomping ground, the Caldera certainly being Legendary in the hunting World!!

I hope that the Caldera does find a way to keep some good hunts there. They closed 2 of the best mountains to hunt this year in the south, closed all but the 2 main roads and lots of confusion about who is on the roads.

We still had an awesome experience this year and every other time we have hunted it.

Sorry to hear about the negatives on your hunt. If that is the norm now, that is a far cry from the last time I was there hunting. I'm glad it eventually worked out for you!

Congratulations on a real nice bull. Sorry to read of the BS that happened on your hunt. That's a magical place to hunt elk. I got to enjoy it the first week of October back in 1987. It was an unreal rut hunt, I was the last Hunter (of 13) to tag out and shot my bull the 3rd morning. Still one of the best elk hunts I've ever enjoyed.

Thanks all for the nice comments. It was a hunt to remember for sure. If anyone draws in the future... If there is a future there! I would be glad to share my knowledge of the area.
