Fellow MM Members,

Just curious for any opinions, thoughts or past experiences for this unit? early or late? Accessibility?

Your constructive thoughts are much appreciated.

Rick,

I hunted there in that area back in 1996 out of Eureka and you diffenently need the snow to get the big ones in that area that have migrated down south from the Rubies etc.
The locals said that the deer migrate to an area south of 50 right there in Eureka. Haven't been back since, we left the morning of Holloween that year and it had snowed about 4-5" that night before. Heard later that the big ones came right trough town headed south late the next week after season closed.
Unit 143 itself has a lot of Private land up through there.
But the Diamond Mtns. can be good IF YOU GET SNOW, SO THE LATER THE BETTER TO HUNT THAT AREA.

I live in Crescent Valley, just north of 143. Not super high densities of deer in there, but decent numbers. The deer will be out of there with much snow. Would be a good archery/muzz hunt for sure. Most deer in 14 are taken out of 144 and 145, then 141, 142, and 143 seem to be split about even from what I have seen. Actually 143 is quite easy to access. You can get in to Vinninni Creek on the East, Pete Hansen on the NW, and Roberts on the south, all can get you to the top.

Muzz huunted 143 a few years back, mostly around Roberts Mtn. and there are roads everywhere but we didn't see that many deer. There were so many grazing sheep one mountain looked like a moonscape. It was a really dry year and that probably didn't help. Most people hunt the Diamonds which also have lots of roads and not many trees as the old time mines burned them all. Have also heard Eureka is a great migration area but never hunted during that time.

Good luck.
