My dad was lucky enough to draw this year's elk tag at the age of 76. He still hasn't killed his bull. He is hoping to shoot a big bull. Anybody care to be so kind as to where we may find one this late in the year?

I'd get a hold of HorseCorn!

See if He will tell you where there's a 380"+ Meat Bull!:D

LAST EDITED ON Nov-17-15 AT 10:32PM (MST)[p]If a low to mid 390 bull was standing in front of him in range would he kill him?

At 76 years old what is his walking capabilities and where is he located if he needed to come on short notice?

If a low to mid 390 bull was standing in front of him. They would think its a 450 bull and shoot it. ;-) I guess its a internet thing :)

Ya +1...no regular guy is passing a 390 bull. Heck I would say the same thing for any 360+ bull. Big is big!!! Might wind up eating the tag if he's too picky.

This thread must be a joke... I can't believe anyone is falling for it.

If its not a joke- If you didn't find and kill a 400" bull in September, your chances of doing so now are slim at best. Even slimmer if your dad has limited mobility due to age. I think the Monroe and Book Cliffs have the most Road-Hunter Friendly land, if he can't get too far from the truck.

Otherwise, I'd say you have probably already missed your chance at a real big bull.

Maybe wait till January and head out to some winter range..??

Thanks cant!

Any 370"-390" PISSCUTTERS?

I'd get with 6 and shoot the 390 bull. With elk having 21+ scoring measurements granted if it's a 6 point or better. You could shoot the 390 and tell everyone its 410 lol. Probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference hanging on the wall.

Enjoy the hunt and don't worry about the score. Because in the end the only thing that matters is that you were able to hunt with your dad. Good luck and let us know how you do.

Headshot is right. The difference between 390 and 400 is so minuscule on an elk that the untrained eye (and even most trained eyes) wouldn't even notice the difference if two were standing right next to each other. 1/2 inch difference on each tine, 1/4 inch difference on each mass measurement, and 2 inches on the width and you're there.

400 might be a personal bench mark. Heck, why not with this tag? I can understand not 'settling' before you have to here. But as the end gets nearer, I'm not passing a 380 bull. But that is just me. I don't agree that the best chance to kill one was in September. The statewide tag holder has regularly killed a monster late in the season in the past.

There are several outfits that know how to find giants. Hightop is one of them. Big6 might be on to something. Don't ignore his post!

In my opinion anybody who is that hung up on some fake number like 400" needs to tear up his tag and trade in his rifle/bow or muzzy for some golf clubs. This attitude is completely disrespectful of the animal and what is wrong with hunting today.

Egos don't belong in hunting. Dudes hung up on score are the same guys who lost their Jr. High inch scoring contest.

Hi guys, thanks for you comments. Your absolutely right. There isn't hardly any difference between a 390 and 400. That being said, there isn't much difference between a 380 and 390. That's a big bull for sure. We're just hoping a giant bull shows when the snow gets deep. And we also know that we could end up with a jerky bull. Been there and done that before. Haha wish us some of your good luck!!#

Just curious deadibob. If you've killed a 400+ bull would you take this tag and go shoot a 380 or 390 bull? Especially a month and a half left in the hunt? Maybe that gives you some insight on our thinking.

What deadibob doesn't realize is:

You Guy's have already taken some BIG Bulls!

You Guys call 350"-360" Bulls Meat Bulls!:D

How big was that Bull you Guys got Last year?

If I had previously shot a 400 inch bull, yes I would still shoot a decent bull whether he was 350 or 390. It's not a contest to me. Score means nothing. 25 years ago none of you knew 320 from 400. It wasn't until hunting videos and magazines started promoting inches that people cared.

Being hung up on size just speaks to a person's character and motivation.

Making sweeping generalizations about someone you don't know also speaks to a person's character.

They're clearly pursuing the experience they want to have, as do you. We all hunt for our own reasons and fulfillment. Let them have this once in a life time opportunity to do it the way they want, not the way you want.

Hey deadibob!

Around 1978 we were starting to see a few Elk on the South Slope!

By 1980 We were seeing what we thought at the time were nice Bulls!

Little did me & My Friends know at the time these were PISSCUTTERS!

A Relative of Buck1's (Around 1980/Give or take a year!)Took a Bull that Blowed My Mind,By Far Bigger than any Bull I'd ever seen at that time!

I'll never forget it!

The Bull today is still an Awesome Bull!

I can GUARAN-DAMN-TEE You a Bull of that Caliber at that time was almost unheard of!

So Ya,even 35 years ago some of us knew what a Big Bull was!

This Family & Relatives Call 350"-360" Bulls 'MEAT BULLS' & turn Bulls Down That I'd love to have just one of!

Carry on!

Why would anyone criticize another hunter for wanting to kill the biggest possible animal with the sportsman tag? I know this is kind of breaking news...but the sportsman tag is a trophy hunt. It ain't an opportunity hunt.

So I take it if deadibob had this tag, he'd roll up to the Wasatch and kill the first 'mature' 6x6 310 bull he saw, right? I'm sure he would. Man bob, you must have done REALLY well on that junior high measuring contest. You should be proud.

Buck1, hope you get 400+. If not, I'm sure you guys will have lots of good memories to show for it. But I hope you get it. Nothing wrong with setting goals and actually accomplishing them. Good luck!

Come on here Big Boys. Let get back on track and find a Monster Bull. Snow has started falling. Contact me when you find one.

I suppose I am wondering if these guys have already killed a 402 and a 370; and 350 bulls are meat bulls, then why ask anyone else where to go? Go get it done. No help from here needed. Good luck on your hunt.

Exactly this! Too good for a 390 bull, but not to good to get on the internet and have somebody point them to an animal more worthy. I guess success only comes in inches and the end justifies the means.

I don't begrudge shooting a trophy, but to look down your nose at a 390 and ask for help in finding something better just seems to disrespect the hunt to me. Good luck and I hope you find what you are looking for. There's nothing wrong with tag soup either.

Probably because we want to kill another one. And I'm pretty sure I didn't say I was the only one in Utah that knows how to hunt. Utah is a big state, can't cover it all ya know.

Buck1 said it best it a BIG state and if someone down on SJ has his eye on a 400+ bull, Buck1 might never hear about it.
Hats off to ya for sticking to FINDING THE BIGGEST AND BADDEST BULL you can find. Good luck hope you find one.

good communication last night buck1. wish you the best with this hunt. stick with it. you deserve the best this state has to offer. it is why they have these permits. kill the biggest the state has to offer to you. keep me posted and i will do the same.

Hey Buck. I saw a bull during the late hunt that was definitely 400 and a titch. If you know Elkass he knows how to get ahold of me. I have the rest of the year off so I can take some time to go looking.

billythekid,

If I'm guessing right, it appears you killed your bull? If so, that 5 is a TAAAAANK! Congrats!

I thought the same thing when I saw the big five. But the I thought that guy looked to good for 76. :) But your running out of time. Hope to see a big old bull soon. Good luck.

>Didn't billythekid have the auction tag?
>

A guy named Shane shot the big five. Its on Tines up facebook page. If you haven't seen it .

If I was bettin!

I'd Bet Him & His Dad are Huntin Hard today!:D

I Have not seen any Bulls here locally that they'd even want to look at!

I've got a couple Friends that Have located a few 370"-385" PISSCUTTERS but I guess these Guys want Bigger?

Maybe today is the Day!

Best of Luck!

He shot a 330ish bull on the last day, I seen a pic on his grandsons facebook page.

I give them credit for sticking it out to the end looking for a giant, nothing wrong with that.

I'm sure that's not the bull they had in mind from the start but it sounds like quite a journey. Good for him. Makes me wonder exactly what I would do with the same tag? Shoot one of the numerous great Bulls early on and wonder if I missed my chance at "the one", or hold out too long and not shoot the bull I dreamed of. I can't imagine even being lucky enough to have that problem anyway.

If I was ever lucky enough to have that problem, I would only let my family know. I would probably shoot one at the end of the first week. I couldn't justify hunting for 4+ months. Oh ya I wont ever have that problem cause I don't play the game. :)

I sounds like they did it they right way, the way they wanted too.

Congratulations to the family and the wonderful 4 month adventure they had.

They had the luxury to be able to hunt that much. They had the tag to be able to be picky and hope for that true monster. We all hope that, they just had the setup to act on it. And they probably made more memories in that 4 months than you could have in 5 years.

Even though they had the dreams of a 400 plus bull it shows that it wasn't all about the size. you can never take away the time they were able to spend together and in the end that is what will be the most important.

Congratulations Guys!!! Sound like you enjoyed it.

Goes to show that even having the Spirtsman tag in your pocket, it's still hunting and nothing is guaranteed.

This is a cool story.

Thanks JakeH for posting that link

This is what I think was the most important thing of this hunt to the tag holder!
As I read the Instagram there was a comment that answered the question of the 400" bull!

"He said his favorite part was spending so much time with his boys doing what we love! Such a great experience for his last Elk hunt! "

Guys this wasn't about killing a 400" + or - bull. Setting the bar so high was he way of spending the maximum amount of time in Elk country with the people he loves, knowing this is his last go around!

I didn't get it either until I read the Instagram post by his grandson.

Thanks young man for posting your grandfather's story and thanks to JakeH for posting the link

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT HUNTING IS ALL ABOUT!

Congrats to the hunter and family!

I love hearing about people enjoying the time in the hills with family and good friends. It's more about the memories and the experiences you gain than it is to kill the biggest, baddest critter on the mountain.

If I could hunt that long with that tag and risk the possibility of tag soup, I would do it too! Because the memories and images engraved in my mind from hunting last a life time. And that means more to me than anything else when I hunt. Many of my fondest memories hunting are with my dad. We still have a few more to create before he calls it quits. Looking forward to our next hunting adventures!!

And this my friends is why we hunt. We get so caught up in the numbers game. What did he score, how big is he, and all the other crap that goes along with it. The real reason why we do it is for the lasting memories. Memories that will never end and I wouldn't change that for the world.
