Does anyone know how the process works when a tag is returned in Utah? Does the tag go to someone who had max points in that hunt (if applicable, say if the tag being returned was from someone who had max points) or does everyone in the draw have a shot at it? Thanks guys.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-29-08 AT 08:32PM (MST)[p]The tag would go to the next inline.. meaning they put everyone who was drawn in an order.. if there were 200 tags... the top 200 people drew.. if someone turned there tag back in, #201 would get the tag. Even if he only had 1 point.

Say the tag came out of the 50% set aside top pool. Would the next in line top pool random number, or the next in line random number get it? The next in line top pool random number is likely to be much higher than the next in line random draw number.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-29-08 AT 08:50PM (MST)[p]Like browtine said The next person in line gets the tag.. And yes the fish and game already know who that is, And if that person cant do it it will go to the next then the next. I know of someone last year that turned in a Henrys Deer tag so there is always a chance

Sorry, a little confused. So when you say the tag goes to the next person in line, it goes to the next person with the most points who did not draw?

Or do you mean that even after they fill the tag quota they keep drawing names until all are drawn and the person who WOULD have been next in line gets the turned in tag?

yes

Received a call in August of 2005 from the DWR saying that the guy who had drawn a CWMU deer tag had got in an accident and turned his tag back in because he would be unable to hunt. I was the next in line and I agreed to take the tag.

NOPE Real story ask deerlove about it. The guy turned back the Muzz tag for the henrys in 2007. As he had to close on a house at the same time as the hunt.?.?.?.? Think I would have changed clossing dates......

no kidding.....those things happen I guess....a few years ago here in ca. a guy turned in a desert sheep tag, the first alternate didn't want it so a second alternate got the tag.....sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction.

The way I understand the system is in both the bonus point pool and random draw pool alternate names are drawn. When a license from either pool is turned in an alternate from that pool is contacted. They then move down the specific alternate list, however long that is I don't know, until someone can use the tag.

I have known people who have turned tags back for a number of very valid reasons. From my perspective one of the most selfish asspects (spelled correctly) of the tag process is someone who knows they will not be using the tag, but waits until the last minute to turn the tag in. Last minute things happen, fine, but knowing in May, June or July that you will not be using the tag and waiting until the week before the season to turn it in is pure selfishness.

If you can't use the tag, let someone else enjoy a long summer of scouting and fun. High point guys that scout all summer and if they don't find the right buck or bull, they turn the tag in should only be able to turn the tag in once without a broken bone of some kind. Just my thoughts.

It is called the Alternates List.

It happens every year...

What sucks is guys turn the tag in like a week before the hunt dates and the Alternate gets very little notice before the hunt.

Give it up!!!! WTF....

last year a very good friend got a call the day before the archery elk hunt, they offered him a wasatch aechery elk tag, he onlt had 3 points. he jumped on it.

but did not fill it. it is a long story, but it was not from lack of trying.

I'm with you guys. It's a shame to get a tag like the Henries and not have time to scout. That is what is the most fun about having a tag like that! They should change the system more like Colorado where you must have a major disaster in your life to keep your points.

Is it correct that if you turn the tag back in, you forfeit your money also?
My son's ex drew a buffalo tag and now we are trying to figure out what to do with it? He wants to turn it back in but doesn't feel like he wants to loose his $400.

He will loose his money I think. I am not sure. But either way make her pay for it and go shoot a bull! Thats if you want to be around your ex's!

That's the big problem. I hate to miss a hunt like that, but then I hate what she did to him!
Her dad drew also and he is a cool guy and I want to go and help him but the ex makes it a pretty hard to swallow...
They are cow permits I believe, but either way, any hunt on the Henry's is awesome. Last year my dad had an either sex buff permit and I think I spent more time checking out the deer!! haha...
I told him I was out looking for buffs though!!!

Having your ex dump you and then having her draw a neat permit on your cc, is like getting kicked right in the jewels for a 2nd time!!!

I agree, that is tough. I dont know what I would do. Tell her you need the $400 and then turn the tag in and she gets her points back, then she can do as she pleases. That would suck, cause that would be a very fun hunt to go on. My wife has 10 points for buff so I am getting excited.
