Wife's first elk

Back in August I received a phone call from a lady who was looking for my wife. Turns out it was Utah's DWR letting my wife know that someone had turned in their late season tag and she was next in line. We knew the unit well and it could have very well been another 10 years to draw the tag, so it really was a no brainer in accepting this gift lol.

The bad thing about the late tag is having to sit back and watch nice bulls get harvested ahead of your turn. At the same time I knew there would be some nice bulls left. The three months went by quicker than I would have thought and soon we were off for the mountain.

We had no intentions of trying to kill the biggest bull on the mountain, just a decent 6 point was the hope. Saturday and Sunday I had some friends who said they would be around to help spot and pack out if needed. We were really hoping to get it done one of those days for that reason, but nothing decent presented itself.

By the third day my wife was getting somewhat discouraged. Not because we weren't having a good time, but I think mentally she had prepared herself for two days of hunting and was hoping to get back to the kiddos. That night we found a very tag worthy bull and the hunt was on.

The next morning we were back in the same area and glassed up a decent 6 point. It was now decision time. Shoot this bull as he was about what our hopes and goals were or pass knowing that there was a significantly bigger bull in the area. We elected to take this opportunity and be happy with the outcome.

Kelli got into position and touched off two 180 grain NAB hitting the bull both times at 475 yards. Even though we were a little worried with where he was hit, the bull did not go 10 yards before he expired.

The rest of the day was fun packing the head and wet cape through the thick baby aspen, but we finally made it back to the truck just before dark. Battery problems coupled with a bunch of snow we had received forced me to return 2 days later with a friend to gather up the meat. Luckily, no animals had bothered the hanging meat and the weather had kept it nice and cold.

Here's some pics and video (including the harvest shot!)

You are brave Spencer to share such a honest video of your wife's hunt on social media. But thanks for sharing the truth about hunting and what sometimes really happens. That Kelli she is a real talker ! But other then not hearing much from her. You did a awesome job putting it together.

Good for her but you lost a hind quarter on that second shot. lol My boy did the same thing last year in Id, he said he didn't want it to RUN off. Tell her congrats!

Thanks. Believe it or not we got lucky. That whole hind quarter was good. Only a small area where blood shot meat was cut out.

Congrats to your wife on a fine bull. Good call on the 2nd shot. With the first shot already in him and no other follow up, I'd have done exactly what you did. I too was hunting the late season......top secret. Love that place. Great video as well.

Yeah, I don't regret her giving that follow up shot given the circumstances.

Any luck for you shadow?

It was a family member with the tag and oddly enough, he was an alternate on a returned tag as well. Yeah, he took a great bull opening day.

RE: Wife's First Elk

Thanks for sharing your wife's hunt GLEDEASY. You put her story together well. Those late hunts are tough hunts unless you really know where the bulls are. I also would have taken the follow up shot. Very nice bull for anyone. Your wife seemed very calm and was able to take the shot without any problem. Would you share what unit you hunted?

Only you could get away with saying that elk. But I certainly can't disagree.

She's proven she can shoot. I haven't harvested anything past 217. She on the other hand took her first deer at 360 (one shot) and this elk at 475 (two shots).

The only reason we saw any elk was because there were still some roaming around from the shipment BigJohn brought in for his daughters hunt :)

Hey I only dropped off the three. The 396 ,390 and Michelle's 380 bull and they all got taken a little earlier then your hunt. Those big bulls , I'am gona have to drop them off closer to the trailer next time so they dont run off into the cwmu's.Maybe I need to dizzy them up a little better.

What a great moment to capture on film, and being together with your best friend! Great bull to boot.

Not getting any video of my bull on the hoof was a big regret. I try to remember how majestic it was when he walked out of the trees.

Lucky for us we'll both get to relive this one.

Wow!! How impressive that was. I really enjoyed the video. You done a fine job. What a hunt congrats to your Kelli and all involved.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-23-15 AT 11:56AM (MST)[p]It's special when you can share a hunt like that with someone you love. I can tell this hunt will not only be fondly remembered, but will build an even stronger bond. Congratulations for making it that way! Fine bull as well!

Thanks all. Certainly proud of my huntress! I knew she could hike and shoot. The cold had me worried but she handled it like a champ.

Now we have a his and hers collection of elk off the mountain range. In fact both bulls were harvested out of the same area.

We probably don't have the space, but I think it would be neat to have them compliment each other some how. Any ideas? My bull is already mounted and like I said probably not the space for the same room. In the end it may not be possibly, but I like brainstorming.

Great work you two! That was one of the best videos of the full story that I've seen. You've got video skills GLEDEASY. Kelli has ice running through her veins also! I wish I could have been there to help with the pack out. Next time for sure. Great meeting you two. I would do it all again in a heartbeat!

Awesome bull and great pictures and video. Congrats
