LAST EDITED ON May-05-08 AT 02:20PM (MST)[p]This year, for something different, I am looking to hunt the western half of the central unit. Mostly to get away from as many people as possible. I have spent time some time out there, and know the deer will be hard to find, but I know they are out there to be found. Any one have any suggestions? I know water is critical.
With the price of gas now, any pointers or PMs would be greatly appreciated.

Well don't get too excited about the Deep Creeks for deer if you were thinking that direction, it's sure not what it used to be!!

I use to hunt that country out there and did have some guys in camp kill some good deer. you will hunt hard to not see many deer. You will have other people out also but if you can get horses you can get away from the poeple, there are some great deer to be had out there good luck finding them

I have googled till my bones hurt. I know as well that I will never get away from all the people. But I am looking for places that I could really use my optics, spot and stalk, not just chance onto a buck someone else jumped. I would love to hunt like we do during the archery hunts. I would love to see deer act like deer, during the rifle hunt. Does such as place exist in Utah?

I had a cow tag in the Deep creeks this past season, and what slamdunk said about lions can also be said about coyotes. Holy chit there's alot of them out there.

Go hunt lions and coyotes and you may run into an area that has a few deer, but unless you can get an inside scoop from someone, the price of gas is really going to limit you. Out there you don't usually just get lucky and happen on some deer. Don't just consider the price of gas either, but the price of wear and tear on your vehicle can end up being more than gas. They wrote an article about hunting the water holes around calleo. Find a big set of tracks and follow them out into the desert. Give it a try it worked for them in outdoor life back in the 80's.

I thought I could get away from the crowds hunting the desert mountains in the northern unit last year. NOT!!! I scouted them all summer spotting lots of deer but nothing worth shooting and on opening day the place was packed.

I have that tag this fall too. I have hunted the unit several years ago and yes the area is remote, few services, long, ho,t dry, dusty roads to seemingly nowhere. A few scattered ranches with friendly people for the most part....the poligamists are a different story.

The Deep Creek Range is deceivigly steep and rugged, what looks like a simple walk on the map becomes something different on the ground. My buddy has an antelope tag in that area so I will combine his hunt for a scouting trip or two for me. I may end up hunting solo which I have done many times......the last time I was in that area I fell and broke my arm. Due to the remoteness I stayed on and hunted for 3 days before heading home and having the arm set in a cast. BTW didnt kill a deer that trip. Hope to do better this time around.

True comment about the lions and dogs....wow there are a bunch. Witnessed 6 yotes chasing a small group of deer for over a mile.

Send me an email and I will share some of what I know about the area and places I intend to focus my time on.
