Have any of you guys hunted this unit? I put in for sheep, but my dad realy wants to get a big buck. He has never got a 180+ muley and wants to before he cant hike up the mountains any more. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

LAST EDITED ON May-05-08 AT 09:40PM (MST)[p]When you say Sheep, are you talking about Goats in the form of Pronghorns?? Pretty sure there isn't a sheep hunt in 44. Pretty good deer unit though, several guys on here had that tag last year...maybe they can chime in.

Sorry that wasnt very clear. I was curious about the unit for my dad for deer.

Had the tag in 05, and took a buck just over 180" and had alot of character. That being said although I say a ton of bucks it was the only one of its caliber. Easy hunt for a 130-145 buck, but your gonna have to hunt for one bigger. I know four guys that had deer and elk tags last year and didnt punch any of them. Draw tag and send me a P.M and I'll help you, but if your set on 180 plus there are better tags of course draw odds are even less.

I had the tag last year and it was a bust. I made the mistake of hunting the last week of the season and saw one buck. There just wasn't any deer but I did hear wolves every night.

I bet that made your hunt worth all your time and money to get to hear some wolves howling. (Proberly over a deer carcas).
The only sound that is better is the sound of the cap poping on my 270, to shutup one of those varmints for good.

Last year was proof of the seasonal affect on this unit. Once a certain amount of winter hits tht unit and the unit above it the deer pour through there and are across Hwy 20 and into units 45/52. I would have a hard time advising you that a 180" buck would be expcected, especially from someone with limited physical abilities, but if you have a lot of time to be there to glass and/or take advantage of the weather that might make the difference. There are 180" deer in there every year, but so are another 200+ tagholders.

I won't comment on the wolves other than to say the wolves didn't drive the deer out of there last year the weather did, do some searches on here and you will find some posts that address this. The good news is that we may get a chance to kill some wolves this year.
