Utah Deer Opener Changes

What are everyone's thoughts on plans to move the rifle deer opener from the third Saturday in Oct.? I know the law got changed in the state legistlature this past Febrary that required the deer hunt to start on the the Saturday closest to Oct. 20th. Does anyone have any clues about what the state is scheming with this change? What are they hoping to achieve other than ruin my current hunting spot? I did hear they were trying to move the hunt earlier so the leaves would still be on the trees in hopes fewer bucks would be taken.

Wowser - this was the first I had heard of this.

I did some research and it appears the DWR wants control of when the gen. season hunt starts. They might consider starting some areas at different times than others. The new law requires only that the gen. season hunt start after Oct. 1 each year.

The new law was opposed by ranchers, and was favored by SFW and DWR.

I maybe dumb, but I always thought that the later your hunt the better. Due to the weather and rut? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

The law was changed to allow the DWR more flexibility to manage out struggling deer herds. Before their hands were tied to around Oct 20th. Wyoming, and Idaho have their general season dates around the first part of Oct. Elk mid to end of Oct. Both further than the rut. Makes sense to me. The muledeer working group will look at dates with the DWR I'm sure. This law change just allows more flexibility.

The law change will give the DWR more manuvering room for changing the archery and Muzzleloader seasons for both deer and elk as well as for the rifle hunt.

Like maybe move the Elk Muzz season BEFORE the rifle season???

Maybe move the Archery Elk season to Rutting times instead of pre-rut...?

If they want to kill more Bucks, move the season into the rut in Nov...? road hunters would love that....LOL

Who knows what they have planned.
