Hello, I have an elk hunt starting soon and I was wondering what you guys that have killed elk with a 270 would recommend for the best ammo. Like what brand, what grain etc?

Buckrush

First let me say i have taken many critters with my 270 over the years and and just love my bar 270.and many have been elk.you will get alot of thoughts and veiws on this question.
I like federal premium in 130 grain up two 150 grain.and i really like any of these.trophy bonded they seem to be easier to find. And nosler partitions, and accubonds.Uless you like to load your own that would open alot more options.

Being as I mix my own, I don't know. But, I like solid copper bullets (which goes against the weight rules listed later). I also like heavily constructed lead bullets, like a Partition, or the Hornady Inter-Lock, and others. I like 140's and 150s.

That said, there are a bunch of good bullets out there and any ole GOOD bullet will do it. Emphasis on GOOD there.

Make sure that you get a bullet that is meant to hit hard stuff (like a shoulder) and still stay together. There are several bullets out there that have a plastic tip on it that is designed to make it open up quickly (a deer or smaller game bullet).

Barnes Vor tx ammo 270 130 grain ttsx bullets. That what we use in our 270. But there a lot of quality ammo out there now. That you can buy at your local outdoors store.

Guess I'll plug Nosler partition 140 gr, but I shoot them out of 270wsm. Nosler Partitions are by and large my favorite bullet for big game.

I just bought 3 boxes of Hornady Superformance 130 grain GMX. Thats the hottest "factory" premium load you can buy (about 150 fps faster than the standard loads) and the GMX = Barnes triple shock. They shoot great out of my Kimber. Should be an A** kicker on critters but I won't know for sure until my daughter shoots an Elk with one next fall.

I really like the copper alloy bullets, Barnes, GMX, etc. they seem to stay together and give good penetration for tough game like elk. The real key is shot placement. My Dad always says "a low powered hit is better than a high powered miss". I had a friend kill a cow with one perfect shot from a .22-250 last week and I personally have killed many elk with a .243. That being said, my elk gun of choice is a .338 Win Mag. Good luck to you, practice shooting and use a good quality bullet and you'll be fine.

I shoot a 130 grain barnes triple shock, and have done for a long time. I have had fantastic luck with this lead on everything from moose to praire dogs! My dad has shot a 130 grain Sierra Game King for over 3 decades and has had wonderful luck with it and won't ever go away from it.

I worked up a max load of IMR 7828, with Nosler Long Range Accubonds in my wifes .270 Winchester. Chrony at 2820 fps. The load shoots a nice group and seems to hit with plenty of power out to 600 on elk. My daughter just took a cow elk with the load at 410 yards on a through and through lung shot. So far so good. ww.shanescottoutfitting.com

The 270 was my big game cartridge from my first big game hunt in 1970. I've shot a fair amount of elk with it. I used to use 150gr Partitions, and then switched to Barnes X, XLC and now T-TSX in 130gr.

I have yet to recover a Barnes from an animal. They shoot through and the animal falls down and they are very accurate. What's not to like?

The last bull elk I shot with the 270 was at 417yds, broadside. The 130gr Barnes TTSX hit him in the right side, shattered the big upper left leg bone and exited into the hillside. The bull took 2-3 steps and dropped. Can't ask for better performance.

Nothing better than the 130ttsx barnes as far as I'm concerned. What I like most about Barnes copper bullets that rarely goes mentioned is that I have always had less damage/blood shot meat from them than I get with conventional lead core bullets.

I killed a really big cow elk in Vermajo NM in 2008 from my old .270 running 140 grain Accubonds over 59 grns of H4831SC @ 2900

I really like Accubonds

I found that the 140 grain bullets shoot the best out of my .270. And the fact that I use the Accubonds in my .338 I would say they would do great on elk.

Would agree if you are only shooting to 250-300 max. If you have to take a 500 yard shot, I would not use Core lokts personally. 150gr Vital-Shok w/ Partitions is all I use for Elk.

130 grain WIN protected power point in the Power bonded line. 3060 fps and hit hard, break bone and keep going thru.

This is a question that I think depends on the platform, my ruger m77 loves and I mean flat loves 150 grain partition. It shoots it a full 6" tighter at 300 yards then any other bullet I've tried. It HATES, federal fusion, can't get it to group worth a turd with them. So go buy a couple of different boxes and throw so lead to see what your gun likes and doesn't.

>A company called Doubletap loads 160
>gr Nosler partitions in 270
>win. That's what I use.

Wow, I have always thought of 150 gr plus bullets out of a 270 to be maybe a 250 yard range bullet, but this ammo looks really good on paper much further than that.
