I recently found out that I drew a BC rifle deer tag through the DH draw. I am real excited about the hunt. The only downside is that I have never hunted out there and really dont know where to start. I read that it is a high transition area and the deer are moving a lot this time of year. I have started rounding up all the maps for the area. It is just overwhelming with the size of the area. Any help on narrowing down the areas to concentrate on that may hold some good bucks would be great. I have horses if the roadless area is the way to go.(although I have heard otherwise)
Thanks for the HELP!

You will be fine, it is not hard hunt. Hunt the middle elevations, bring extra gas and water, and an extra spare tire. Be selective, you will see lots of bucks, but if you see a 26-28" 170 type buck get real serious about shooting, because it is tough to do much better out there. The hunt gets better later as bucks start rutting, and most hunters shoot early and are gone. There are lots of roads and it is one of the few units where road hunting can be pretty effective. It is hard to get away from the roads and ATV's going everywhere unless you go to the roadless, but most of those deer have left by then. It is tough to scout for the rifle hunt as most bucks are on the move and have left the high country. There are lots of guys on here that have hunted the unit that can give you good advice. Good luck, not that you need it after drawing a DH LE tag.

Congrats on the draw. Dax gives some good advice. I would also suggest to stay close to the Colorado border - there are a lot of bucks moving back and forth at that time and there are some that pretty much stay there most of them time, never really going too far away. The area around Wolf Den is always productive.

Geeeeez Roy, why didn't you give ME that information last year on my tag!!

I hunted around the "Green Hornet Hotel" cuz your goofy sister told me that's where all the bucks were at!! Lol

In '05 Wolf Den was a parade of trucks. On Sunday night, all the weekend warriors were there just looking for anything with horns. We passed 4 groups within 500 yards of each other that were all dressing deer. Never seen anything like it.

congrats on the tag i drew this year to took 8 points but coud use some pointers as well

People usually find some good hunting out on the Seep Ridge road near Klondike Canyon and the area north of Indian Ridge. Look for some large cattle corrals and go east from there!
