Wyoming unit 38

LAST EDITED ON Mar-02-16 AT 10:22AM (MST)[p]We finally drew our tag in unit 38, we have never hunted this unit and would appreciate any information that you could offer up. This will be my fathers last Elk hunt and would like to make it a great memory. I just ordered maps of the area should have them in the next week. I could offer up some advise on areas in Colorado or New Mexico that I have hunted in the past.

This will be a archery hunt

I'm curious about 38 as well. I'm looking at getting out of the points game,and i currently have 8 points. My question is how much private land is there,and is most of the land huntable by foot,or do you need horses.Thanks...

The archery hunt has no private land issues at all.
You do not need horses. You can get 2 miles away from roads, and should be in good enough shape to pack out quarters.

I grew up in the unit. Know it like the back of my hand. I live in Montana now and the rest of my family cant draw tags. And if they did they rifle hunt. But I can help. email me at [email protected] and Ill fill you in.

Hopefully you mean 38 not 39. I spent 2 weeks hunting there in 2015. I killed a 315 7x7 in 2014. However I was hunting on private ground the year I killed the bull. So in 2015 I hunted public ground. Stayed in the campground at Sibley Lake. There are alot of elk however there are a ton of people. Get in touch with me and I can give you the 411.

I drew with 9 pts as well. What do you guys think about bivy hunting in this unit? I know there are a lot of roads in unit 38 and access is abundant with all the roads. Just wondering if you guys bivied out at all, or if you hunted from a base camp everyday.
