I have 20 acres of private property in Northern Utah, Chalk Creek. I've always been an archer and I've always taken a good deer each year i've bow hunted. Now i'm truely trophy hunting, wont draw back if it's not 30" wide or more. Our cabin has a lot of deer an moose around it consistently due to a water trough and salt block 35 yards off the porch but most of the larger bucks are always on the outskirts and on top of ridges just before dark or first light.
I want to set up a smaller 30 gallon water trough system off to the the east over a ridge that drops off into a couple pockets of scrub oak and meadows (where the big boys cross thru and over year after year. I want to be able to fill it from about 200 yards away uphill, running hose or plumbing pex that will drain into it. I would like to be able to capture the rain somehow too. I'm going to place the drum in a spot shaded and clear out as much sage brush as possible to make it more quiet to stalk thru. I'll leave the taller shrub oak as i'll need something to be able to sneak around. The area is perfect, i'll have 3 shooting lanes anywhere from 25 to 100 yards, any of which I am confident and heavily practiced with my bow.
Anyways I have a few ideas on setting up the water system but wont have the luxury of using a large tank to fill from as I'll have to pack a couple 5 gallon jugs in each hike. Any recommends or stories of doing something similar would be greatly appreciated. Also any other ideas of mule deer attractants that you know work??

I know a few people who used water tanks and and man made watering holes built with liners for cattle but they seemed to attract antelope too. They set up a blind near the fence line near where the water source was seemed to work well but you need to keep the water available so they get used to having a water source to go to.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-06-08 AT 03:20PM (MST)[p]the best bet would be to get up on the ridge at crack of dawn to catch these bucks.and i do not know if chopping down as much sage /slash deer food is a very ethical or good idea i guess it depends on how much you are trying to get rid of.it kind of sounds like this is a off your back porch hunt to me does not seam to appealing or challenging.a good bet would be to plant better feed for the animals and i am not talking salt. food such as bitterbrush, white clovers, small burnett, other plants that would make it in that enviroment and the animals would strive on.plus you would be doing the deer a favor by letting them bulk up for the harsh winters that area has.just my opinions
