Drew bookcliffs roadless

It's a cool unit. You'll see lots of bulls. Big bulls are there if you're patient. Steep country. But a very fun hunt

Yeah, I second what catman says. Lot's of bulls, be patient and shoot a big one. This was a while back. Best to have horses or mules for this hunt.

You are in for a treat man! There is not a prettier unit to hunt elk in. I drew the tag in 2012 and had a great hunt despite it being very warm, and poor rut activity. I have included some links for you. A few of the posters below are or have become my friends as a result of having the tag. Feel free to reach out to anyone of us 4 for information. You will have a great time, and will hopefully have the opportunity to harvest a great bull.

That unit was once the premier unit in the state. It does not have the impressive genes of some other units, but it can not be beat as far as a "Utah wilderness" experience. It is ROADLESS so getting a bull out of that country without meat spoilage requires ponies (or a posse of 10 young packers).

Thirty plus years ago I went in there on the opener with two family members who had tags. It was so hot we slept under the stars and half uncovered. We had two Rodeos with borrowed horses and the elk were silent. In three days, I did not see a single elk and we came out with our tails between our legs.

Much of our lack of success was due to inexperience and poor luck. Regardless, that kind of trip is an adventure. But some years when elk go silent, it can be tough anywhere.

I'm sure with the help you are getting here, your experience will be much better than ours.
Best of luck and keep us posted.

LAST EDITED ON May-17-16 AT 07:23AM (MST)[p]I hunted mule deer in the roadless section last September and saw some great bulls! plenty of the 340-350" bulls. There are bigger bulls, but gotta work for them and be patient. I saw a 380" bull come out. I was told it was steep and I didn't think it was that bad compared to places I have hunted in ID and WA. Horses would definitely make it easier, but it was doable with a buddy or 2. Message me if you want info where I was hunting.

Congrats on the tag! It's such a fun hunt! I hunted it in 2013 and finally killed this bull on day 14.

Contact Flying J Outfitters. They use horses and have been in that area for over 30 years.

I have helped guide it for 4 years now. Great place and have found some great spots and taken some great animals.

Like others have said, mules or horses are the way to go. Most bulls on the Book Cliffs will top out in the 340"-350" range. Once in a while there is a 370" type bull show up, but very seldom. Anybody who tells you different is blowing smoke. If you find a bull you think to be 340", with a structure you like, you should be pulling the trigger. Some years the roadless has a rut that really gets going, other years it stays pretty quiet. You should be ready to adapt your hunting style to the conditions. It is pretty common to have a bear show up in camp on the roadless. The DWR took away hound hunting in the roadless a few years ago, and as a result the bears have really lost a respect for humans. Make sure to keep camp cleaned up to minimize the problem.
