Colorado Area 70....

Well, me and a friend rolled the dice, and drew Colorado area 70..4th season rifle tags. We have hunted in the area a few times over the years, and we are guardedly optomistic about our chances for a good hunt.

I do have a couple questions though.. Does anyone know of a landowner permit for the same hunt. We have a friend that may be interested in buying the same permit if it is available.. Also, we would like to discuss trespass fees with anoyone who may know of a good opportunity to improve our hunt...

We are just some hound guys that like to hunt deer in the off season. If you are able to offer a little help with our hunt, it may just come back around to you in the future.. If you are more comfortable, please feel free to PM me.. So, Thanks in advance for your input, and Good Luck to all in the upcoming hunts.. Let's hope it is a good, short, cool, wet summer.. Thanks, KattSkratch...

Usually the landowner draw is in July I think. I would place some adds around local towns in the area and you might be able to get one for a decent price.

I was told that in Nautarita? you could get a 70, 3rd last year for $700.00 a few weeks before the season. Problem with that is who wants to wait til mid-Oct to know they're huntin Colorado plus 4th season? x's 5 I'd say.

How many preferance points did you have? I had four and did not draw this hunt? When I looked at the draw odds on this site it told me that with four points I would draw a tag 100% of the time?? Just curious how many points you had so I'll know how many more years it will take me to finally get a tag for this unit? Thank you very much!

We had more than 4 points.. I think we all averaged out to about 7 points. I am sure it would have taken more than the 4 points to draw this hunt. Have you hunted 70 before? What made you decide to try and draw this hunt? Good Luck, KattSkatt

Very good unit to hunt and especially if you are talking about the new late 4th season in mid Nov. Wow, it should be an awesome hunt! If early snow in high country , you could have a great chance at a big deer! Good luck!

I think it took a minimum of 5 points to draw this hunt..I don't think there were any statistic on this particular hunt...I'm pretty sure the 4th season was new..100% with 4 points? You may have been looking at the 3rd season..

LAST EDITED ON Jun-16-08 AT 12:30PM (MST)[p]CDOW reported 5 points to draw a 4th season. This does not mean if you had 5 points that you were guarenteed to draw it means that some with 5 points drew. Always count on 1 point above what the cdow posted for guarenteed draw. A prime example is if they got to the 5 point pool and there was 2 tags left but 30 guys put in with 5 points only 2 out of the 30 will draw, however, the CDOW will post it as 5 points required to draw the tag. A little misleading if you don't know how it works.

I'd bank on 5K+ for a 70 4th season.

katttraxx, just so you know CO does not average points like in Utah. The guy with the lowest points in the group is how many points the group app will have.

Give Bob Bray a call. He lives/ranches in Redvale. Also, guides and is on the CO DOW Board. He's been in the business a long time and I'm sure he has vouchers. PC

You can figure it out with the raw data in the "Hunt recaps" area.

There were 34 total tags for general drawing 4th season. 888 people applied. For nonresidents, that means 12 tags. There were 6 people with 6 or more points that applied. There were 19 people with 5 points that applied. Therefore 6 of 19 nonresidents with 5 points got picked.

KattTraxx...

To answer your question, we use to hunt this unit every year when I was in High School and my first few years in the Navy before Colorado went to a draw system. We took some really nice bucks through those years.
Since my dad and I have started getting PP for deer and elk and it looked like we could draw it with the points we had I put us in for deer and elk. I thought it might be the first time I could hunt deer and elk with a rifle. WRONG, I did draw the rifle elk hunt though. So now we will continue to collect some deer (and elk) pp and maybe in another two or three years we will be able to hunt up in 70 again for deer and who knows maybe elk too.

Go to the Colorado DOW website, go to the statistics section,

2008 statistics have listed:

Preference points required
Drawing summaries
Hunt Recap summaries.

click on the hunt recaps, then scroll down to your hunt code. You need the specific code, not just the unit

For this hunt, it is listed as DM070O4R

It then gives how many general tags, landowner tags, resident apps and nonresident apps, and how many had each level of prefrence points.
