Book Cliffs Late Elk

My Father in law drew the late season Book Cliffs elk tag. I have spent a lot of time down there over the years, but never during the late season. Has anyone hunted it before? Where is a good place to start scouting? Is it worth scouting early at all? Are they in similar areas that I've found them in october? This will really be his last go for a good bull. Not looking for a giant, just a solid 310 class bull. I'm willing to trade info on other units or other states.

Thanks!

I'll tell you who it was . . . it was that D@MN Sasquatch!

Congrats on a cool tag. I can't seem to talk my dad into this tag because he's afraid of cold weather or conditions causing us to "be in for it"...

I hope to see some updates from your hunt so that I can really show him what this hunt is all about. Good luck as well. I'll be spending some time out there with my Multi-Season Deer tag, I'll post up anything "elk" that I see...

I have the same tag this year.

I will head down there a few times to get a better lay of the land in the early season and look for dark canyons. It is a fairly sizable unit, so there are a lot of places where I haven't been and that look great on google earth.

I plan on heading down there a few days early to do some scouting before the hunt. I would think that mid to late October would be a better time to scout, because the bulls have found their refuges from breeding and really don't have to move a lot.

I am looking for the same age class of bulls as your father in law.

It should be a great year.

Good Luck

I'll be out there for the Muzzy hunt. I would be happy to let you know what we see and get but I am not sure how much use it will be by the time the late hunt rolls around. Good luck, I love the Books!

Congrats on some great tags. A 310 bull shouldn't be too tough to find. Scouting in October usually isn't too productive as most bulls will be moved. Be prepared for looking through a bunch of busted bulls, this is also true for the muzzleloader hunt.
