I have an OTC elk A tag and a general season deer tag for units 66 and 69. I am a NR and have never been to Idaho. I am looking for any information on where my best start may be, what lands I will have access to, and what to expect. I am in overall decent shape and have spent the last 9 years in the army as an infantryman. I would appreciate any help or knowledge that anyone has to help me get a start. Thanks and God bless.

I have a good friend who hunts there for elk every year. He's been hunting there long enough that despite the high hunting pressure he has found a good spot for opening morning. After that the elk go into the thick stuff to hide. If you spend a good majority of time still hunting during midday through thick woods you'll find some. Glass in the morning and afternoon. There is a good population of elk. This is just general info. Post any other questions you have.

I'm not certain on that. I am not super well versed in all of the ends and outs of where else I could hunt legally other that 66 and 69. I have the A tag which is archery only either sex from Aug 30th-Sept 30th and antlerless only, any legal weapon from Oct 22nd- Nov 16th. I would be interested though in meeting up and maybe planning something for the future or even seeing what the deer situation is like near you. Thanks!

Thanks for the advice. The major things I keep hearing is get away from roads, and people and glass. I am super unfamiliar with that area, is there a specific location that you would recommend to help me narrow my starting point down?

Great Elk country!! One of my favorite units growing up! General rifle gets a lot of pressure but i am not sure about the archery hunters.

Thats good to hear. I am not expecting to shoot a monster bull, in fact I would shoot a cow with my bow if things came down to crunch time. I just want to bring some meat home more than anything but a decent bull would put the icing on the cake!
