Can anyone give me some pointers for where to start looking? ive done all the online research I can, ive heard to try the canyons by tropic, or up on the plateau. any help would be greatly appreciated, I plan on taking the whole hunt off, any info is greatly appreciated.....

Yep, I am going to give up all the info that I have...to a first time poster too. It has taken me 20 years to accumulate the knowledge I have of the Pauns..... ok now get ready, try the canyons by tropic res. and up on the plateau.. from my experience you will need the whole hunt.

Congrats on the tag. I drew a rifle tag a few years ago. we killed a couple good bulls. Try Whitman bench. Bluefly creek and Kanab Creek. Good luck and keep us posted.

Just out of curiosity why did you put in for one of the hardest elk hunts if u don't know anything about the elk in area? Just wondering if u know what u got yourself into. I don't know it real well but I know it's a tough elk hunt.

thanks for the warning. I did know it was going to be a hard hunt, but full disclosure I drew with 0 points, all my research beforehand said I would need 2-3 point to draw. My plan was to make a few trips down there this summer and next summer to learn the area better, but I got lucky in the draw. I'm not completly unfamiliar with the area, I hunted spring turkeys there last year, but mostly stayed between bryce and red canyon...

Prime, not meaning to be harsh but the info I did give you is what I would tell anyone. It is basically the same thing that turk told you. There is a reason that the tag is easy to draw....it is one of the toughest L.E. elk hunts in the state with a success rate under 20 per cent. That being said I have found and helped my family kill several bulls off the unit. The biggest drawback is the fact that if you keep the tag you are subject to a 5 year wait to apply for an elk tag again in Utah. There are some places I would focus on specifically but they are what some people call honeyholes and I cant/wont give those up. BTW utarchery you might be careful who you are calling an a*** I thought you had already learned that lesson??

I appreciate the honesty, I wouldnt expect anyone to give up their honeyholes to a complete stranger. I know my dad would disown me if I did that with any of our spots.

It is a tough hunt. I do know someone who killed on that hunt last year and got a nice six point bull, but his dad has 20+ years of guiding experience and they don't talk about where they hunt. Good luck. It beats a general season tag.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-16-16 AT 09:40PM (MST)[p]prime, there are some dang good bulls on that unit. hopefully you have the time to scout hard and hunt even harder and with a little luck you can come out with a nice bull.

jim, I dont know what your referring to. I just didnt think you were the kind of guy that would say that kind of stuff. it was pretty harsh

"if you keep the tag"...

I would keep ANY LE tag I drew with 0 points! It will probably take at least 5 years to draw anyway, so not that much lost

I had the tag two years ago. Hunted the whole hunt and had one legit opportunity at a 250" bull. The rest of the hunt i was burning gas and boot leather trying to find elk that dont exist. I know the unit well, thought I could beat the odds....Ha!!! Boy was I wrong! Wish I would have turned it in, hunted general units and accumulated enough points for a Wasatch or Manti tag. This is a deer unit, the elk that are on it will push into private off the top or into the park when pressure hits. Very very few elk, very poor hunt. They are giving antlerless tags on it for a reason, to keep the herd down. If I had a time machine I would go back and turn that tag in. Guys that kill are either guided, or locals with access. Don't be a hero, save your points. It's ridiculous this is a LE elk unit. Utaharchery "you can suck a golf ball through a garden hose" haha ring a bell buddy? Hope you are doing well in your new guiding career, beats driving a forklift! Don't swallow your chew my friend! Good luck Prime if you choose to hunt it, I hope you are the "one" to kill!

I drew the tag 4 years ago with 1 point. Bocephus describes my hunt to a T. I did get a decent chance at a 300 class bull but couldn't get closer than 90 yds. I spent about 30 minutes in the middle of his cows and never got to draw. Last week , park line and private pretty much sums it up. I did really enjoy the hunt. I love being up on the plateau in late summer. Hunting was the excuse. I will apply again after my waiting period
