Elk and Wildfires

My unit in Arizona is currently on fire. 33,000 acres have burned within unit 5B south. This is a small unit and many of the places I intended to scout are within the fire boundrys. I know these fires are healthy for the future. Also I have heard elk will move back in fairly quick. What should I expect from a September archery hunt? Will the grass return quickly with the summer monsoons or is it a great year to have a tag in the next unit over.

Elk like recently burned areas as long as the fresh young grass is growing back. I usually see more elk action on burned areas after about two years.

On the Monroe Unit in Utah, after last week's 2100 acre control burn of engliman spruce, aspens and sage brush, with in 48 hours elk were rolling in the black charred dirt like a dog with fleas. Flat on their backs, all four feet straight in the air. If anything sprouts on your burnt area, elk will be on it like ducks on seed peas! Call out your rain maker, right now!

Looks like our hunt will be OK. Our scouting trip might not be to productive. We already have the plane tickets and rental car, but we might not be allowed in the woods. I better bring some golf clubs.

That entirely depends on the severity of the fire. Slow-moving intense fires means nothing will be growing there for quite a while. Grasses and other plants can spring back quite quickly from a low intensity fast-moving fire.
