My dad has this tag. I will go with him and help him kill his first brow tine this September. We just received the map of the unit, looks like the north end is really steep. I think we will go for the last 10 days DIY and hunt our tails off, Sept 6-16th. Is there any reason to go earlier on this one? I have no idea where to even start on this hunt???? We have a nevada archery deer tag in August and that's been more of the focus since it's a month earlier in terms of scouting. I think we will plan on doing over night spike camps on our back, moving until we hear elk or see elk. I have heard a lot of good things about this hunt, especially the size of the bulls. I have also heard from many that the country is steep and deep. With only 20 total tags, there can't be much pressure I wouldnt think. Anyone want to help a father son DIY effort to kill pops his first brow tine bull at 68 years old? Dont let his age fool you, he's been hiking 5 days a week already and last year, we did 20 miles one way on horses on our elk hunt.

I have never hunted the Dutton. I know they dropped the age objective a while back and the quality has gone down some. That said, it still produces great bulls every year, including this one in the video:

Good luck on the hunt. The dates are as good as they'll ever be for archery. It should be a lot of fun!

That can be a nasty pile of rock. It is a very hard hunt that humbled me. I was sure I would simply hunt harder than the next guy and kill a monster bull. That was terrible tag soup....The year I hunted it was hot and dry with very little talking and big Bulls were not with the cows when the season ended (9/11 or 9/12).

I hunted my butt off and ate tag soup. On the same hunt a guy was driving a quad down the road by deer creek and had a 350 + bull run past him. He got off his quad, cow called and killed a huge bull 50 yards off the trail.

There is plenty of camping spots and more than enough wild country than you will need.

I hunted in forest creek, deep creek and deer creek.

Best of luck...you are going to need it.

It is a fun hunt. You can hunt earlier than that and sit wallow for an excellent opportunity at a good bull.
Then hunt the week you are talking about for bugling bulls. Remember, once herded up those herd bulls are TOUGH to kill.
Here is a bull I shot on that unit with my bow a few years ago:

You are in for a real treat! It's good to hear you and your dad are in shape! That mountain is steep and rough, but also holds some monster bulls. My advice would be to use horses if you have them, and if you don't, pack a tent, hike into where you are hunting, and stay a few days! Here are a few bulls we pulled off from there last year on the late rifle hunt! Good luck and most of all, have a great time with your dad!!!

bowhunt, nice bull! thanks.. We will be spiking 2-3 night trips at a time, so we dont have to waste a lot of time commuting each morning and night to camp. I was going to send you a pm with some ideas if you dont mind? Tony

It can be super frustrating if super warm/dry. Those conditions often delay the rut. If there is a full moon it may complicate things even further. Elk may be nearly impossible to find if hot/dry...especially during day light hours. It's pretty easy to give up but stay with it and hopefully you'll have success.

I hear ya on the tough hunt... Hot,steep, dry and rocky... We will slowly chip away at it and hopefully poke one of those giant bulls in there.

Hey Buddy Take a weekend a couple of weeks before the 10 day hunt time and just sit on a couple of waterholes for the weekend, maybe run down friday and run back home Sunday afternoon, You just might have the hunt done before that 10 days comes rolling around. That is just my thoughts. Sure would like to see a Monster Bull with his toe tag......
