I currently drew an 08 M3 tag for mule deer in Ca. Has anyone ever hunted the late season in x6a any info would be a great help. I'm not super familiar with the area but live within three hours of this zone and plan to spend a lot of scouting time before the season.
Thanks!

i have family that lives in doyle. hunting there for muzzle depends on how much snow falls in the mountains. this year we had good snow and the deer where everywhere. between reno and doyle i saw a heard of about a hundred every weekend. it is going to be a hard area to scout until you get the snow in the hills and the deer come down.

pray for weather(snow!)! you'll know it when its on!
its a fun hunt when your drawn that late for anything!

I was hoping that the scouting trips might produce some accessible areas and that I might be able to determine some of the potential migration paths. If I'm lucky I might be able to meet some locals that can point me in the right direction. I read a article that stated 3000+ deer migrate through that zone and I'm super excited. I know the potential of this zone and I hope I make the most of this hunt.
Thanks Todd

I hope you take a look at your tag again its not for x6A it if for the portion of lassen county that is in x6b.These are a few pics of what you might see if it snows hard enough to get the deer to come over the hill from plumas county.Last year the a lot of the deer didnt move into the hunt area till to late, the first week of the hunt I still saw deer on the summer grounds but I heard the deer started moving in the last few days of the season.

Pm me if you would like to talk more a friend of my brother has the
same tag and we will be scouting a lot also out there for him good luck.

I had the tag in 05, cold & no snow. 178 4x4. Check your inbox. Be careful of your location. that hunt boundry is the county line on top of the ridge and not the hunt zone. Pretty much if you can't see 395, you're out of the zone. DFG keeps an eye on this one. Also previous post is accurate about scouting early except for access roads. The deer move in and out of the area during the hunt. There's a wildlife refuge on top of the mountain to the south that holds some smokers. Good luck, you'll have fun looking at a bunch of bucks if you put in some time.

Thanks for the info and the pictures, we'll have to get together later and talk. I just came up with some great news today. A business aquaintence of mine has a family ranch below the refuge and are going to allow access to their property and maybe even lend a helping hand. Two 30+ inch buks came from that area last year. Besides their property I will still continue to scout the rest of the zone and spend plenty of time up there. Thanks again and hope to get together soon!

Had the tag last year, no weather at all, was like summer even on the top of the ridge where the boundary is. You need weather to push the big ones out of the Dixie wildlife area. The two 30 inchers you speak of came off some private land that people paid big $ to hunt. If you don't get weather you will need the $ or a connection to get behind a gate where the deer don't get hunted during the general season. Too many tags for that zone during the general and all the local deer look like they have been sorted through a screen that only lets 22" and smaller bucks through. If you get snow that will be one of the best hunts you will ever have. We hunted hard and passed up lots of 20-24" bucks and finally got an 8x6 on the second to last day. Some of the deer had finally started moving by then since the temps had dropped to near 0. Without weather you will be disappointed in that once in a lifetime tag. Start your weather prayers now, if your connect works out you won't need anybody to help you but if you need help shoot me a PM. I got some decent help last year from some members here, I will be happy to do the same. Too many lurkers to just throw it out there.

you have to pay $ to get a "30"" buck from doyle? i have no doubt there are few people in doyle that think they are outfitters but for the most part people in doyle love hunting and are more than willing to help you find a trophy buck. snow fall does play a big part in the trophy potential of the area. the area does have alot of private land bordiring public land but for the most part private land owners are more than willing to grant you access to public land without paying any $ because they share the same passion as us about hunting. when you are in doyle scouting the area stop by the local, and only, watering hole called the "buck inn" and you will meet some people more than willing to help you during your hunt, but be ware they will not charge you $, instead they might want to tag along to share the enjoyment of harvesting a deer with you. if the snow does not fall for you my cousin got a tag for x6 so i will be happy to help you find the SECOND biggest deer in the area! good luck on your hunt.

Thats not what I said, if it snows he won't need any help at all the bucks will be standing on the bald hills above the doyle grade. If he has a connection to private land or can find one without paying that would be ideal for a summer like season. The bucks and land he was referring to from last year were what I was talking about but don't let the facts get in your way.
