I DREW THIS TAG BUT DON'T KNOW WHERE TO GO. I HAVE HORSES TO PACK IN WITH, IF NECESSARY. INFO ON HOTSPOTS FOR A QUALITY HUNT WOULD BE GREAT.

I had the tag a couple of times yrs ago. A frickin zoo opening weekend. The last weekend would be the best time to go.Check your maps. Any of the trailheads from Mammoth Lakes,Convict ,or Parker will take you into the high country.

Thanks for the info. Has any body hunted around Tioga pass, lundy lake or Saddlebag lakes? Does anybody know the terrane near Agnew pass, Spooky meadow, or towards walker lake from Agnew? Any info is much appreciated.

I grew up in Bridgeport, and have seen a lot of nice bucks come out of that area if you are willing to work at it, and we get some weather. the conway summit area south of the virginia lakes rd usually has some desent bucks in it but nothing to write home about.

Thanks for the info on conway summit and saddlebag areas. Does anybody remember the 39 inch buck shot near Lee Vining peak during archery season? 8 or so years ago.

Try Copper Mountain, or south of Lundy Lake. The northeast facing mountain side has some stands of aspen 8,000-9,000 ft.
There are some nice bucks taken out of there every year, but you have to work for them, you can hike up, or you can get on top, not many hunters up there, by taking 120 west toward Yosemite, there's a access up there thru a boy scout camp, 1N03, is the forest road number, watch for it as your heading west from 395, maybe a couple of miles, it runs along Beartrack Canyon you end up on top of the mountain above Lee Vining, you end up just East of Lee Vining Peak, head north/northeast towards Lundy canyon, Dechambeau creek headwaters, glass the aspen stands, if you can get up here during the summer, and get to know the road in. Saddlebag is too high, hunt the 8,000-9,000 level, I live here and hunt here and do a little off season wildlife photography, I've a few 26"-28" bucks come out of that country. KBUCK

KBUCK, right on, thanks for the info, much appreciated. Is this country horse friendly? My animals and are used to dry camping just about anywhere in the wilderness. do you know the country above silver lake? I'm considering in packing into Alger lake or Waugh lake, but I'm affraid that it is too high. Thanks again for info on Lee Vining.

my friend has it and the article in his archives, somewhere. he is trying to locate it for me.

oh yah i remeber that one, it'll be on jessies'

Hmmm. Lots of information on the Sierra section.

Guess that is why the west side of this unit is "Disneyland North" on opening day. 750 tags and 90% of them will be on the granite slopes. Did I mention all the fishermen still in the area? How about several hundred hikers still on the John Muir Trail?

I prefer the east side of the unit, south of Mono Lake and northeast of Crowley Lake. Much larger area. Less deer.....but bigger deer: true muleys'..... and way, way, way, less hunters. 20 times more horse friendly. Vast meadows, acres of Aspen, lots of water sources...but no fish, no hikers and no casual campers.

On the west side, weather is a MAJOR factor....you need snow to move the deer out of the park. On the east section....you are in the area where the deer are already there...no waiting!

You can scout the east side now and see deer. Pretty much won't see much quality on the west side without some snow having fallen on the Sierra crest.

Man....I will catch bloody Hell for this post!

Nickman thanks for the info, much appreciated. I definitely will check the area out. I was told about chicken springs, herd of it? Remember information is only good if one uses it, this means getting out of truck and off the road. Again many thanks.

Well, he could hunt the Bodie Hills.....just couldn't shoot anything as they are not in that zone. That would be X12.

Was that big buck really shot in the park? Do you have the article or a link?

MANZ......the one in the posted photo was a G3 buck, legally taken in 2005. Don't know about anything taken from the "park' illegally.

There was a huge velvet buck taken 6-7 years ago during the archery season (if I remember right) that the guy packed in several miles. He shot the buck and came back out and tons of pictures were taken. I believe it was in the Western Outdoors News here in Ca. The man checked the buck in with DFG and decribed the area where he took the buck. The officers were a little skeptical of the area that he had described and asked that he take them to the area and show the gut pile/harvest spot. He did and it was found to be within the park boundary. Buck was confiscated, not sure what happened to the hunter. I remember reading the article, but its certainly been a while. The buck was HUGE! Dont remember width and point count. Searched for newspaper articles but couldnt come up with anything. Sorry. Maybe someone else remembers this deal.

The buck I'm referring to is NOT the buck in the picture above.

That's pretty close to how I remember the story too.....

JB

No discredit to the G3 buck, I was refering to the velvet buck. Its too bad that the velvet buck was taken illeaglely, knowing this state it was on the wrong side of the drainage.

Nickman, thanks again for the info on the east side. Are there any areas in particular that you can recomend? Any information is greatly appreciated.
