GMU 4 Colorado

If you are going to hunt the blm land near baggs pray for an early snow. If not you have to hunt the Routt NFS land, lots of main roads, with a fair amount of roadless area, foot or horseback travel only. When you get into craig stop at the chamber of commerse and seek herd info. I believe his name is Ned, he knows every step of the herd. If you have the resources a cow tag would be a good idea. Good luck, ninety five percent of the transition zone is private land.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-27-08 AT 01:17PM (MST)[p]Area 4 is a large area(Steamboat to Craig). Second season will see lots of hunters in the California and Slater park areas north of Hayden. Very rarely will you see significant snow during the second season so the migration usually isn't in motion.

I personally like the northern portions of the area only because you can get away from other hunters easier. Lots or elk but lots of hunters also.

If you've got cow tags shouldn't be a problem. You probably won't see any big bulls but there are respectable bulls there.

Lots of private land on the fringes of the NF.

Good luck - I'll be there for muzzie season helping my wife get her cow.

I'm sorry - I read your post as "ELK" . Deer are an entirely different story. I don't know what the winter kill was like up there but I've always seen lots of does and small bucks. The bigger buck at that time of year will be as high as they can get.
