I am scheduled to hunt in South Dakota mid-November for pheasants and white-tail deer on an indian reservation. I have been looking forward to this great hunt.

My problem.....

I just drew out in unit 40 in Idaho for deer. I would imagine the best time to hunt the unit is also mid-November. (same time I am scheduled to be in South Dakota.

Further probelm....

It will be hard to tell my wife that I am going to be hunting for two weeks in November in addition to fishing and weekend bird hunts.

Solution....

I may have to choose between the hunts.

Question for all of you.....

I have never hunting in unit 40, but I understand there are some nice deer in the area. Have any of you hunted unit 40??? What kind of animals am I likely to encounter assuming I hunt hard??? How likely would it be to find a buck with a spread exceeding 30"????

Thank you in advance for your responses! If any of you can think of a great solution, let me know.

You will most likely never get another chance to hunt unit 40 again. Keep that in mind as you make your decision.
Good luck on whatever you do.

Judo i think your hunting the same indian res as we are so why not do both the season in SD runs into december so you should be able to 'squeeze' both hunts in

Bury me in the hills so i can fertilize the grass and grow bigger animals for the rest of ya

Well--I know for a fact that your wife will be upset, so why don't you let me take your place in South Dakota, and we'll all be happy. Plus, you're going to need some extra time in Idaho to find a good buck, especially the way you hunt!
Quit playing on the internet and get me hooked up with your Fairview associates.

Bev42,

You suck! I would give you a hard time but after all the baskets you made last night which led to our 50 point victory, I may have to wait a week to give you a hard time.

I have been lucky enouph to hunt unit 40 twice and I would say spend as much time on that hunt as you can becouse if you do you could come away with a real nice buck. You can hunt whiteys any year with much better draw odds and even many over the counter tags in most states.

definatly go idaho sd deer you can draw every couple years and then if you tag out in idaho late season pheasant gets better with weather.

It's true the Idaho hunt is the one you want to focus on,
a Mid-Dec hunt you can still get alot of birds and you can catch some good whitetails getting the feed on, You got 2 great tags.
