Anybody want to post some pics of deer (dead or alive) from 61 from over the years? I drew a 61 3rd season deer tag and just curious to see some pics. I won't turn down any free advice for that unit if you want to share either. Thanks in advance.

How many in your hunting party? How much time are planning on spending on the hunt and or scouting?

I am planning on ariving just a few days before the season, and hunting the whole season. I have been to the area once this summer and hopefully make a couple of more trips later this summer/fall to learn more. I am planning on spending the week in a tent, hunting solo - Can't wait! do you have the same tag mangler? Have you hunted 61 before?

No,I wasn't lucky enough to draw the tag. I hunted it in '03, it was tough, not enough weather. It was windy, cloudy, with just enough snow flurries to get in the way. Hunt the north end, Wolf hill to the towers. Be prepaired to shoot up too 500 yards, if neccessary. If you see a couple of doe's standing outside a patch of aspens, check it out because there's probuly a buck inside. The main herd is supposed to be in Yellow jacket canyon, but it is a hole. Show up a week early if you can. if it snows heavy hunt atkisin, blue and outlaw mesas and canyons. Most trails are foot, horseback and dirtbike friendley, not quad friendly. Most of the forest service roads are trailer friendly, Goodluck.

Here is my cousin's buck from 61 3rd season last year. My buddy and I ate our tags looking for something better.

It was 70 degrees during our hunt so hope for some weather. The deer are scattered and can be hard to find.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info Mangler, I am thinking of concentrating my efforts in the northern third of the unit, seems like there are less roads (more ground to cover on foot). I will definatly take a look at those areas you mentioned, thanks

Horniac, thanks for the pic. Man that buck looks pretty swollen. Was it taken at the end of the season? I am hoping for some good november weather during the hunt, not that 70 degree stuff.

Did either of you run into many other hunters, elk or deer? With all of the roads in this unit, I am sure there is a lot of "road hunting" going on.

Keep the pics comming.

I was lucky enough to draw this tag also for the 3rd season. I'll be making the drive up from Idaho a few days early to do some scouting and checking out the area. Let's keep in touch and compare notes. I too will be tent camping or living in my truck for the trip. Hoping for some weather.

Later,
IB

NoDak80,

The deer was taken towards the end of the season in the southern portion of the unit. Yes, you will see a lot of deer hunters on the mesas driving around checking the doe groups waiting for the rut to kick in and the big boys to show up. If you get off the roads you will see few hunters. The elk hunters seemed to be up higher on the Divide road...

Thanks for the pics sjh, a couple of nice bucks.

I really thought you guys would be all over the chance to do a little bragging. Hopefully I will be doing some in about 4 months if things go as planned.
thanks

If there is any weather prior to the 3rd season opener there is no need to hunt high. Stay in th PJ and sage. Try Third Park out of Nucla. A little farther north are Atkinson and Blue Mesa which are possibly better. Don't shoot the first buck you see until you look him over well. Good huntin'!! PC
