Archery elk and hounds?

Just a question I would like to get some opinions on! Spent the last 10 days in southern Utah, I know that the archery LE Elk hunt is on right now, and I had guys hunting bear with there hounds, now if I had a archery LE tag I would have been pissed, What's your thoughts, I know one area where we watched bulls for months are now gone, do to this situation. I seen hounds in more than one area also! I personally think it should be moved back to the rifle LE hunt!

Boo freaking whooo.... Get over it. There are often multiple seasons going on at the same time. You have no more right to hunt or the land than does the hound hunter. If you do not like it then suck it up and pay a tress pass fee. Just deal with it. THe bulls are still there and you should expect to work while hunting. It is all part of the game.

Yes kind of is what it is but you know the rifle guys would have a conniption if they're limited entry elk hunt was during the general rifle elk hunt... Just saying. Hounds can make things tough, but they seem to move on quickly and things will hopefully settle down for you. Good luck.

Elk have to deal with hounds year round between lion season spring summer and fall bear hunts. Ive watched alot of hound trail within yards of elk and it doesnt bother them.

Dead Bear = more Elk. So maybe just shake a houndsmans hand next go round. I personally would be more upset about seeing a tree hugging liberal on the mountain than any hunter.

Talk with the Good Ole UDWR!

That Likes Hunting Big Game Non-Stop & Overlapped Hunts for 5-6 Months!

Hounders use to get a little Time when no other Hunts were taking place!

But not anymore!

Hounders Like to Hunt Too!

Petition to take away hound hunting. Then complain because bear and lion populations are too high. It's a no win for the hound guy. Stop and ask one, they might tell you where the elk are. We are usually in the woods more than any other hunting demographic and understand the game as well as most biologist.

Get over it and band with the other hunter.

On my San Juan elk hunt I had some houndsmen release at least 20 hounds right at me up a little trail I'd cut in the oaks. It's one thing to be following 20 hounds and quite another to be what appeared to be the subject of that race :)

Needless to say they all parted and brushed my pants as they sped by only to hook up on the bear about 150 yards past me on the hill. Talked to the guy a few days later and we had a good laugh about it.

My only gripe with the houndsmen is that they don't really like to kill anything. They shoot the really big ones, but they are much more into the chase than pruning bears from the mtn. Bears are the only predators who can smell the after birth and calfs. They follow the elk around in the spring and slaughter the calves. Good for the bear population, not so much for us elkaholics who would rather be the ones hunting those elk.

In the end of the day I've never met a houndsman who wasn't a good guy. You just had a little back luck with where you were wanting to hunt. You just gots to pay attention to where they hit it hard every year and use them to your advantage.

Cheers,
Pete

I feel the pain. As a hunter and one who hopes to draw a freaking bear tag someday here in Utah with 11 points, I do think that the bear hunt would be best to start a few weeks later. I am a bow hunter and I have had 2 LE elk tags on the Manti. Year 1, never had an issue. Tag 2, HUGE ISSUE. Once the hounds were in the canyon the elk were done for about 3-4 days. I had hounds follow me for hours one day. I was stalking in on a giant 5x5 that was bedded, later killed on the rifle hunt (353), and the hounds came after me and even though I pulled back and left it that day, he was never seen again until the rifle hunt. So I dont like that the hunt is during the same time as an archery hunter. It is tough enough with the bad dates we get. I just wish it could be moved back just a bit. But the Dwr wont. The rifle elk tag is the cash cow of wildlife. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the replies guys! just wanted some opinions! and elks96 if ya ever draw an archery tag for LE elk, go scout all summer find some nice bulls, then let me know so I can show up with some hounds!!! Like I said I wanted some opinions on this I didn't say the archer should have more rights than the hounds man, or to the land, all I thought is maybe it should be moved back a little, Dam can't even post a question on here without someone getting there panties in a bunch.

Hey C3?

A Bear Might Eat a Calf Elk on occasion!

"SLAUGHTER"?

I'd like to know how many Calves are Slaughtered in Utah each year with your Expertise?

And I Suppose the Year You were Hunting Elk You were not Hunting Just 'The Really Big Ones'?

Houndsman live for chasing bears and cats as we do big muleys and elk. There's only so many days in the year and everyone needs a time to hunt. If I'm not mistaken the archery bull hunt runs 4 weeks and the state has left archery hunters the best week or two of the hunt without houndsman chasing bears. The guys that I could see being more justified in being disappointed would be the San Juan archery deer hunters since the first week of their Hunt is the most critical in my opinion. I don't know how long any of the bear hunts are, but if it's a way long one, maybe it could be argued to be shortened a week or shifted. I'm sure that's a very touchy subject though and would never fly.

I don't really have much of an opinion either way, but, the bear hunters in NM can't run dogs until after the archery season is over. Seems to work ok here?

Hunt Hard. Shoot Straight. Kill Clean. Apologize to No One.

I too like to run after bears with dogs , but here on N.M. from 9/1-9/24 , no hounds. It does work well.

New Mexico has it right. Come archery season only way to hunt bear and cat is with stick and string and no hounds. Due to this exact reason.

Lakedrifter,

I've seen an entire canyon of deer & elk blow out as soon as the dogs are let loose. In 2010 I was spotting for my brother down on the bookcliffs archery hunt and he was setup on a good herd bull for that area. That a.m. the bull was 100 yds out moving toward him and some guys let their hounds out at the top of the canyon. I'd been glassing deer and elk all morning and the canyon was packed with game. As soon as they heard the hounds every animal busted out of the canyon full throttle. We never saw that bull again. Kinda frusterating.

Later in the week I was sitting and spotting and a sow walked up on me unknowingly, she ran her cubs up a tree and had me pinned down on a big flat rock with no where to go but back past her cubs to get away from her. Dumb on my part but my pistol had been bugging me while I was sitting while glassing so I put it in my pack, then it started to rain so I set my pack under the tree that her cubs ended up climbing. I was pretty much up sh☆☆ creek. All those hounds I'd heard at 4a.m. all week driving the roads made me wonder if she had been run by dogs in the past. She came at me the second time and I hit her with a big stick I'd grabbed as I was backing up when she half charged me the first time. Then I thought what the hell, I might as well bark at her like a dog and see what happens. The second I started barking her entire demeanor changed and she moved off the rock and down into the scrub oak 30 yds. I barked at her the whole time walking past her cubs tree, picked up my pack and walked out of there barking for a 1/4 mile or so.

I guess I owe some houndsmen a big thanks for running that bear in the past because she was dang scarred of a dog bark and it ultimately saved me a wrestling match with a big sow.

Now days it doesn't bug me as much when I hear the hounds!!

This is a hard question because we ask the DWR to squeeze lots of hunting opportunities into the fall. On my OIL moose hunt I was expecting the first morning (Sept 17) to be really quiet in the woods after archery season was over. When I showed up on the opener there were 10x the number of trucks at the trail head because the extended archery hunt started that day and hunters that had been in other areas for the general archery season had moved to the unit I was hunting. Not only that but the grouse season opened and a bunch of guys were going up and down the trails shooting at grouse. It was a kick in butt because with so many guys in the woods the moose changed habits.

I don't think the DWR will ever please everyone. We can make our opinions known but with so many competing parties doing the same, it is unlikely we'll be completely satisfied with the outcome.

I think he clearly gave you his opinion. You should clarify if you only want certain types of opinions, then you wouldn'thave you knickers in a twist either Too funny.
