LAST EDITED ON Jul-11-08 AT 08:29PM (MST)[p]So far this year the scouting looks dismal at best for the opening of the archery season. I have been out a couple of times and have covered about 13-14 miles. In those miles I haven't seen a buck I want to put my tag on. Usually by now I have located a 30? buck or a buck that will score 180? or better. I think the winter was harder on the deer than expected. I have also noticed does hanging with bucks this year. To me this means they didn't have fawns so I can only assume they were aborted.

Anyway's here are the only pictures off my trail camera this week. It was out for 7 days and I only got a few pictures of bucks. I am new to this and this is only my second time out with a trail camera.
Setting up the camera with a photo check.

Here is a picture of the first buck I captured on the trail camera. I took this photo through a spotting scope this morning

Well I thought it was the same buck but after further review the buck on the trail camera has a cheater on the left G2.

Looks like I need to pick a different area or maybe go for an elk instead they seem to have made it through the winter in better condition.

On the plus side I tried out my new Slingshot back pack from Eberlestock. This is a pack I won a few weeks ago in an archery shoot. This back pack carries the weight very well and I hardly even noticed it. I will be using it more in the future. This back pack can also carry my bow. With one clip the bow can be taken off your pack and shot in a matter of a few seconds. I would say they are worth the $130 bucks if you are interested.

Scott, nice crisp photos. What kind of trail camera?? Looks like you have the camera thing figured out. I like mine and have many bad photos of me off of trail cameras. A guy has to remember to smile on approach.

Mike the camera is a cheep 3.0 pixel Moultrie I won at a SFW banquet. I think they go for around 100 bucks.

The Bookcliffs was an awesome way to learn how to use a trail camera. We would have over 60 pictures in a single night on any given water hole.

Here is the largest elk I captured on my camera

I have had more fun scouting with cameras than any other way recently. It is just like Christmas morning.

Here is an embarrassing picture of a buck on one of my scouting trips. Sadly this is how all my scouting pictures over the last few years have ended up. I just don't have the equipment to take a decent photo though a spotting scope. Come on Cabalas get with the program and get the vortex brand so I can get a new scope with my Cabalas bucks.

This buck was 4? wider than its ears. So giving this buck a 22? ear spread it should touch the 30? mark. Too bad it's missing a G4 and has short points

I took the photo last week

LAST EDITED ON Jul-11-08 AT 10:13PM (MST)[p]I use Moultries also and have been very happy with the quality and delays. That buck looks like most of my "spotter" photos, fuzzy! I am just glad to have a digital camera and not waste the film, which I had done for 10 years. Also, that bull is a stud.

Here is a photo from one of mine. Alive or dead?

I see some elk in the top background that are surely alive. The bull in the wallow looks like he may be dead. His legs are pretty straight for being alive.

Nice pix as usual Scott. I need to 'steal' one or two of them for my elk hunt.

Packout, I do believe that bull is alive, at least when the photo was taken. It looks like he is rolling in a wallow. Made me look twice though.

The bull is alive, just wallowing. He sure looks dead in some of the photos. Elk are an odd creature and the cameras capture it all.

Scott, I hope you get on something which makes you happy. With your past success, you know how to get them dead.

We have had the same luck this year in our scouting efforts. Today was the first time I have ever been up in my area and not seen at least a small buck. We did set up some cameras today so we will see if maybe a few big guys did survive the winter.

SCott without giving up to much info what range are you scouting on? Or at least let us know central SE, S etc.

Im interested in deer survival through the bad winter?

>Cool video's Dallan. What kind of
>set up are you using
>and how much cash can
>we expect to drop for
>something like that?

StealthCam I450 w/ external 12volt battery. Not sure on cost right now, pretty cheap, prolly around $125.
