I have enough points to draw the fishlake early rifle elk tag next year. I was wondering how the Elk hunt went this year. What type of bullls were shot, did people see a lot of bulls , and is it worth cashing in my points for or waiting a few years for a better unit. Any information or pictures about this years hunt would be great. Thank you

I have never hunted Fish Lake, but I wanted to comment on "wait a few years for a better unit."

Have you really looked at how many years you are away from jump up to the top units? Not knowing how many points you have or what other units you are looking at makes it tough to say, but I'd look really closely at how long it will take, and decide if you're willing to wait or if you want to hunt now.

Fish Lake puts out a few monsters every year.

Fish Lake has a big elk herd. There are good bulls shot every year. It has a lot of country to hunt. Almost all of the LE early rifle tags in Utah are worth the points. San Juan gets a good claim to fame, but not everyone that goes there shoots 350+ bulls. If I had my heart set on fish lake, then I would drop the points in a heartbeat and hunt it.

My dad had the early rifle tag this year. We didn't get down there to scout, but we were familiar with a few areas already and had some info from friends. He killed a decent bull the 4th day. (he wasn't looking for the 400 behind every bush, just wanted a nice 6x). We didn't see any monsters but every year there are a couple big ones taken. (the biggest we saw was in the headlights heading back to camp after the pack out). The smaller bulls were out in the open but there were a lot that wouldn't show themselves. The advice given to me when asking friends from down there was a 340 bull was NOT to be passed on. The few bulls I seen taken were in the 290-310 range.

It's a big unit with lots of really nice area. I think it's a fun mountain. I've got 13 elk points, and the Fishlake is being considered for ML one day.
