Since I've been putting in for Deer for the last 8 years, does anyone know if I can switch to Elk next year or do I have to keep putting in until I draw a Deer tag?

You can change to elk if you want. However, depending on which state you are talking about, you could loose all of your deer points if you don't apply for several years. For example, in Utah you can keep your points forever. In Wyoming (and many other states), they will be deleted after the second year.

In Utah you can change if you want. You however can not take your deer points and turn them into elk points. I have the same amount of deer points as yourself so I hope you try for one year at least for elk. WINK WINK

Yeah its Utah. So I will loose all my points if I switch species. I was hoping you can carry them over to another species. But if not thats cool.

You won't loose your deer points you will never loose your deer points until you draw the tag or die. You however will loose your advantage for not applying every year and be placed in the next year?s pyramid scheme with 500 more applicants. Stick with the deer you are close to drawing almost anything except the Henneries. That unit will take you another 100 years to draw if you are the last one to draw.

I would recommend you to keep putting in for your tag if not for a point for deer. There is a large pool of hunters with just a point or two less than you have now, it would be best to stay ahead of the pack. Plus, who knows how the new micor units are going to affect your point pool. They may all change to preference points at which time you will lose all your points if you draw a general season tag. It would be best to put in for your points and draw a decent LE tag in the next year or two. After that you will have plenty of time to put in for elk.
