late wasatch elk tag

LAST EDITED ON Oct-31-16 AT 04:44PM (MST)[p]My dad drew the tag bgw and he is mentoring my oldest boy. We are very familiar with the far east side of the unit but the last few years the bull numbers have really dropped. Interested in what you might have seen. Thanks.

My dad drew the tag as well and is mentoring my 14 yr old son. We have a few spots in mind but nothing positive. Was hoping for some snow to move the elk. I've heard that this can be a great tag. Not expecting to shoot a monster but would like the opportunity to see some decent bulls. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks !

I have the tag and am coming out solo from Missouri. Take care of those youth hunters first but if you know of any nice bulls after that feel free to give me a call. I'll be on the unit scouting starting Tuesday afternoon of next week.
Thanks for the generous gesture.

The critters have to win every time. I only have to win once.

Hey guys we are gonna pass on bgw's offer so hopefully he gets in touch with ya. It will be a fun hunt. There are still some good bulls but just not what it was a few years back in the area we hunt. 6-7 years ago we would see some monsters on the muzzy spike hunt. The last few years alot of raghorns and not much else. I did hear of a 350-360 pushing cows last Saturday by a friend deer hunting that we will be going after. What part of the unit will you guys be hunting?

Sambo,
I will go look a couple nights this week and see if I see anything.
I will let you know.
When does the hunt open?

We have been scouting west of Strawberry Res near the Waters Canyons and around Wallsburg. If we cant find much around there we will head east to Tabby. Have seen some good bulls in the past in these areas but again like stated before a lot has changed in the last years.

>When does the hunt open?

Mike,
I think it starts a week from Saturday... at least the late Nebo hunt starts then and I'll be down there with a NR friend who I hunt ducks with in Nebraska.
I know you're always good for great tips and tricks so feel encouraged to call me if you know late Nebo.

There's going to be some happy hunters this year in the area I've been watching. The bulls are showing up and I'm wishing I had a tag!

What area are you watching? I had an early rifle tag and it was a very tough hunt. Watched a toad of a bull all year just to have someone screw it up opening morning and never turned him back up.

The wasatch is tough that way. Did you end up getting a bull? With all the hunting pressure you have to have back up plans and a lot of luck. Most of my time is spent on the south end of the unit. Past experience with areas and knowing where to go helps. Biggest thing is being able to glass and hike. We had family with tags and killed a 350 bull on the early hunt opening day and a decent bull during the muzzle loader hunt. I like the late hunt best.

It's a very tough unit! nope I came home with 14 years of tag soup! I had some chances and some smaller bulls and didn't pull the trigger. I was after a trophy and hunted everyday as hard as we could on horseback and hiking, just to come home empty handed. I had several back up plans but just couldn't close the deal on any.

Good on you Mike!
Good luck to all tag holders.
The late hunt can be tough if you don't know where to locate the bulls.
They were still sounding off a bit last Saturday during the deer hunt, which is pretty late for bull music.
