I learned second season rifle hunts are tougher than you think. Having hunted late season in other states before, I thought I knew beforehand what it would be like. Word to the wise, it's way warmer in NM even towards the end of Oct. the Bulls had split off from the cows and were in the darkest, nastiest place you could find. On the fifth and last morning, I finally spotted a cool shooter bull at 1,500 yes. Since I'm not a military sniper, I decided to cut the distance via hiking back to the truck, driving around and praying he would still be out. Long story short, he wasn't out. But after taking a gamble and heading from the only water hole around straight to where we had last seen him, the elk gods smiled upon us. 50 yd shot through the trees and one bullet later from my 338, I had my trophy...http://www.monstermuleys.info/photos/user_photos_2016/92988image.jpeg

7x8, he would be a 8x8, but sheared off the G5 on the one side. I have a picture of him with the G5 intact, missing about 16 inches of bone in that side...very happy with my last day bull

Awesome!!! Good looking bull. I LOVE hearing guys actually cutting the distance even when that means maybe losing an opportunity. I shot an elk at 500 yards once. Dropped him. Never again, the rush wasnt there for me. (everyone to their own). Off my soapbox, congrats again.

Congratulations on taking a very fine bull! I especially like the fact that you worked to get a closer shot and that it worked out. Sounds like it was a great hunt, even though those short five day seasons make me nervous.

It was a fun hunt, although the five days go fast. My dad didn't tag out, but did see some big bulls. I hope to draw it again.

I just wish NM would age their bulls, I would have loved to find out his age since he was an old bull.

I have videos of him in August that another person had, my video through my spotting scope and the kill shot through the trees on video. All great memories...

Yep, great looking trophy there. Good for you.
